Bristol Bears have moved to secure two of their most influential figures, with fly-half AJ MacGinty and long-serving captain Steven Luatua both extending their stays at Ashton Gate.

MacGinty, one of the Gallagher PREM’s most experienced operators at 10, has agreed terms through to the end of the 2026/27 season after making 56 appearances and scoring 369 points since arriving from Sale Sharks in 2022.

Bears DoR Pat Lam pointed out the value the USA international brings to the group.

“AJ has been outstanding both on and off the field since joining the Bears, and we’re thrilled to have him remain with the club for another season,” he said.

“He’s faced a challenging period with injury this year, but his leadership, professionalism and commitment to the group have been exceptional throughout. The influence he has on our younger players and the standards he sets every day are invaluable.

“AJ is a true professional with a genuine hunger to keep improving and competing, and we’re excited to continue working with him and seeing the impact he’ll have on the group moving forward.”

MacGinty added: “I’m really pleased to be extending my time with Bristol Bears for another year.

“My family and I have loved our time in Bristol and I’m excited to continue being part of this group. We’ve got a great group of players and coaches and there’s a strong culture here, a lot of ambition within the squad and I believe there’s still plenty more we can achieve together.

“The supporters have been brilliant with me since day one and I’m looking forward to representing the club again next season.”

Alongside that deal, club stalwart Luatua will move into a tenth season in Bristol colours, having already racked up 160 appearances and captained the side 90 times.

“Stevie has been hugely important to everything we’ve built here at Bristol Bears over the past nine years, so we’re delighted he’s extending his stay with the club,” said Lam.

“He continues to lead through his actions every single day, whether that’s on the field, around the environment or helping develop our younger players. His professionalism, experience and competitive drive remain world class.

“Stevie cares deeply about this club, his teammates and our supporters, and he desperately wants to do everything he can to achieve the big goal he had coming to Bristol — to win the PREM before he leaves.”

Luatua said: “Bristol has become home for me and my family, so I’m incredibly grateful and excited to be extending my time here for another season.

“I’ve loved being part of this club’s journey and I’m keen to contribute both on and off the field. We’ve got a great group of players and staff here and an exceptional environment, with a lot of potential and ambition for what’s ahead.

“The support from the fans and the city has always meant a huge amount to me and my family, and I’m looking forward to another year representing the Bears.”
