The Blues have confirmed the signing of one-time Wallaby Darby Lancaster for the 2027 season.

The 23-year-old is headed for his fourth Super Rugby team after stints with the Rebels, Waratahs, and, most recently, the Force, for whom he started five games in their 2026 campaign, scoring four tries. The New South Wales product claimed his lone Test cap in 2024.

A former U20 star, Lancaster has opted for the unorthodox move in an attempt to grow his game under incoming head coach Jason Holland, who currently oversees the attack portfolio at the Hurricanes in a joint capacity, as he had previously done with the All Blacks.

“The Blues are a club with a huge amount of history and ambition, and I’m really looking forward to being part of that environment,” he said.

“There’s a lot of talent in the squad and some world-class coaches and players to learn from. I pride myself on competing hard in every area of the game, and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said Lancaster has all of the attributes the club is looking for, both on the field and off it.

“Darby is an explosive athlete with speed and aerial skills, but what stands out just as much is his competitiveness and approach to the game,” he said.

In a recent interview with Nine, Lancaster said he remains committed to the Wallabies and hopes to earn his second Test cap, but was excited by the brand of rugby Holland has led at the Hurricanes, and hopes to learn from the coach as well as All Blacks veteran Beauden Barrett in this next chapter of his rugby journey.

The news comes on the back of the Western Force revealing that they will welcome Australia Sevens duo Aden Ekanayake and Wallace Charlie to Perth in 2027, having landed former NRL star Zac Lomax earlier this year.
