Munster have publicly backed Gavin Coombes after the disciplinary case involving Tadhg Furlong was dismissed, while also taking aim at commentary surrounding the incident.

The Leinster and Ireland tighthead had been cited following last weekend’s United Rugby Championship clash between the provinces over an alleged breach of Law 9.27, which covers acts contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship, including grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.

After a lengthy hearing on Thursday, an independent disciplinary committee unanimously ruled that the citing complaint against Furlong was not proven and dismissed the charge.

However, the panel also stated that Coombes had given “an honest account” of his recollection of the incident and that the citing complaint had been properly brought before the committee for determination.

Munster have now responded with a brief statement making clear that their support for the No.8 had not changed.

Interim chief executive Avan Lee said the club’s priority throughout the week had been to stand behind Coombes and stressed that position remained unchanged following the verdict.

“The priority this week was to back Gavin and for the club to stand behind him, and that position has not changed,” Lee said.

“We believe it is important that independent disciplinary proceedings are allowed to conclude without unhelpful commentary from people with a clear influence over public perception.

“Respect for that process, and consideration for everyone directly involved should be paramount.”

Furlong is now free to continue playing for Leinster and Ireland, with no sanction imposed following the dismissal of the complaint.

A full written summary of the committee’s decision is still to follow, with the URC saying it will be published as soon as reasonably practicable.

The ruling also leaves Furlong available for Ireland’s Nations Championship campaign, while Munster return to URC action sitting ninth in the current table.

Would the ‘independent’ panel have ruled otherwise if there wasn’t such a crisis at TH for Ireland on the verge of an international window?

If so, it’s worrying from a game governance point of view.

General public will presumably know more after the written judgement is published.

As wishy-washy a response as could be!

Somebody did it but nobody’s guilty, so we gone so far woke that doing nothing is seen as a sufficient response to poor Coombes complaint! Somebody needs to “stand up and fight” has Ian Costello not left the building yet!?
