Bath player ratings vs Lyon | 2025 Challenge Cup final
Bath player ratings: Bath powered to a second trophy of the season with an impressive 37-12 Challenge Cup final victory over a dangerous but ultimately comfortably quelled Lyon Olympique Universitaire Rugby.
Here’s how we rated the Bath players:
1. Beno Obano – 8
Anchored the scrum effectively and provided key defensive contributions in the tight channels. A strong physical presence throughout, doling out heavy shots on any Lyon carriers foolish enough to cross his path. His try after half-time felt crucial.
2. Tom Dunn – 8
Accurate at the lineout and industrious around the park. Wouldn’t take no for an answer when rumbling over in the 19th minute. One of Bath’s most consistent performers on the night.
3. Will Stuart – 7.5
Scrummaged firmly and made several key interventions in open play. Part of a front row that laid a solid platform.
4. Quinn Roux – 6.5
Brought physicality in contact. Went about his work with no little efficiency and a certain lumbering intent.
5. Charlie Ewels – 7
Organised the set-piece well and kept the defensive line tight. Disciplined and composed under pressure, even throwing in the odd offload.
6. Ted Hill – 7
Quiet on the carrying front but hit like an armoured personnel carrier on defence. Showed up with some big moments through his physicality and energy, but nothing terribly flashy.
7. Sam Underhill – 6
The White Orc delivered a high tackle count and disrupted Lyon’s momentum at key breakdowns. It was all going well before he was yellow-carded for a head-on-head with Davit Niniashvili, which he was fortunate was just a sin-bin. Interesting that Johann van Graan kept him on while removing Hill and Reid on 50 minutes.
8. Miles Reid – 8.5
Offered balance in the back row with his work rate and accuracy at the contact zone, but it was his all-action carrying that stood out in the first 40. Gave it everything in his 50 minutes on the pitch.
9. Ben Spencer (c) – 8.5
Controlled the base smartly and delivered crisp service under pressure. Some near-perfect kicking out of hand too from the former England international, while his pass for Max Ojomoh’s try was sublime. His 63rd-minute effort couldn’t have gone to a more deserving player.
10. Finn Russell – 8
Mixed his game like a Scottish alchemist, kicking (mostly) accurately and distributing with his usual nonchalance. Had some lovely touchfinders in the first half and managed territory effectively in the second. Stood up in defence too.
11. Will Muir – 4
Struggled to contain Ethan Dumortier, with the sideline failing to save his blushes just three minutes in, and he failed to read a scoring pass from Finn Russell later in the half. Contested well in the air until a hideously mistimed chip-and-collect attempt clattered Dumortier and saw him binned. Not his day individually.
12. Will Butt – 8
Used all of his 6’3, 105kg frame in the collision. Ripped Lyon’s defence open on 15 minutes with a 30-metre break before forcing the pass. Played a key role in shutting down Lyon’s midfield threats.
13. Max Ojomoh – 7.5
A powerful showing in the midfield. Always alert in transition and was wise to Spencer’s over-the-top pass, which he greedily lapped up for his 24th-minute try. One miscued kick aside, a fine evening’s work.
14. Joe Cokanasiga – 6.5
Made metres on the few occasions Bath got him the ball and was solid covering back when he had to. Didn’t get too many opportunities to rumble but made the most of the scraps he got. His sit-down on Vincent Rattez won a fine round of applause in the West Stand.
15. Tom de Glanville – 7.5
A rock at the back and showed good game awareness in a busy first half. Covered space intelligently and linked well with the back three, although an overcooked kick that went over the dead-ball line blotted the auld copybook. A moment of individual brilliance set up Ben Spencer’s nail-in-the-coffin try.
REPLACEMENTS:
16. Niall Annett – 6
Came on and maintained set-piece accuracy. Worked hard defensively in the final 19 minutes.
17. Francois van Wyk – 7.5
Shored up the scrum late on and added fresh energy in contact.
18. Thomas du Toit – 7.5
Made a strong impact at the set-piece, with Lyon’s pack on rollerskates by the end.
19. Ross Molony – NA
Brought experience and control in the final phases, but not on long enough to rate.
20. Guy Pepper – 6
Contributed immediately with physicality and energy. Played a part in keeping Lyon in their box.
21. Tom Carr-Smith – NA
Closed out the game with maturity. Not on long enough to rate, though.
22. Ciaran Donoghue – NA
A brief appearance but did not look out of place. Not on long enough to rate.
23. Alfie Barbeary – 6
Added power from the bench on 50 minutes and provided a key carry late on.
