England's Asher Opoku-Fordjour ruled out of Six Nations

England tighthead Asher Opoku-Fordjour is set to have an operation on a shoulder injury that he suffered in training with his club side Sale Sharks, which will rule him out of the Six Nations.

Coventry-born Opoku-Fordjour, 21, hasn’t played since picking up an elbow injury in the Gallagher PREM defeat against Exeter Chiefs at the end of November and was on the verge of a comeback when he suffered his setback.

Sharks boss Alex Sanderson says that Opoku-Fordjour, who started England’s win over Argentina in their final Quilter Nations Series clash, will have his date with the surgeon’s knife in Cardiff tomorrow while the team travels to Toulouse.

It’s a blow to Steve Borthwick, who made him the youngest English prop to win a cap when he came off the bench against Japan at Twickenham in November 2024, with their first Six Nations match against Wales three weeks away.

“He will be having an operation to stabilise his shoulder in Cardiff tomorrow, which essentially puts him out for the next couple of months. It’s a real shocker for him, us and England.

“It was a contact on the ground last week that destabilised his shoulder. I haven’t really got much more information than that. He was training and running, but wasn’t feeling good and went for a scan.

“And you have to follow medical opinion. It’s a routine operation, and he will be back at the end of the Six Nations, I’d imagine,” he said.

Sanderson says that Opoku-Fordjour has the kind of mentality that will let him take the massive disappointment of missing the Six Nations in his stride.

“It takes a special kind of person to take on the psychological load of playing international rugby at tighthead at 19 or 20 years old anyway. So he has got that ability to handle and reframe.

“Most people would go dark and down rabbit holes. He doesn’t, he just gets on with it. I had a little chat and cuddle with him and wished him the best, and he said, ‘yeah thanks, no problem.’

“He is probably looking ahead to when he comes back and how strong and fit he is going to be. That’s the type of character that he is. People have a mentality that suits the pro game. He is one of them,” he added.

Gutted for Asher here. He's had to be really patient for a consistent run with the team, and it looks like with Stuart's injury, he finally has his chance to showcase himself with 5 successive matches off the bench… then this happens. Sport can be cruel sometimes. Keep your chin up Asher mate, your time will come!!

In my view, in his and Stuart's absence, Fasogbon should be the one deputising off the bench for the 6 Nations. Though I have a feeling Borthwick will lean on Davison instead. He's a solid player, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t know if I subscribe to the school of thought that “the experienced head will be needed here”, as I have heard some say about this. When you consider the philosophy of long term squad building, giving the young guy the opportunity will only aid your cause of establishing depth for years to come. Fasogbon will benefit a great deal from this kind of exposure to test rugby. The England coaches will learn nothing about Davison that they don’t already know by playing him in these games. Davison making the squad makes sense. The match day XXIII? Not for me. Just a penny for my thoughts.

Agree with a lot of what you’ve said here, but not sure Davison in the squad does make sense if he isn’t going to get game time. As you say, Borthwick isn’t going to learn much about Davison, so if he’s not vital to winning games - what’s the point?

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell that Borthwick does this - but if it was me I’d go Heyes to start, Sela off the bench, and Kloska as backup. Kloska is a long term option who has been excellent this season and last, while giving a bit more experience than Fasogbon.

Agree with all of that tbf. I like Sela a lot too, though he’s probably not ready at the moment. Heyes to start, Afo off the bench, Trev waiting in the wings. 👍

Heyes, Davison and Fasogbon. Need someone else bar Heyes in there with international experience. It’s a stop gap ultimately. As long as it’s not Harry Williams I’m all good.

I think there’s a really good chance Borthwick does go for Davison because of his “international experience”, but he’s only played 50 minutes of test rugby - 41 of which have been against the US!

I agree with fl .. Sela looks a very good prospect. But is he ready for the step-up to test rugby? Fasogbon also looks very good. However, if anything happens to Hayes in the meantime England could be in real trouble.

ooof. Wow. Big test for Heyes and whoever gets picked alongside him!

It would be extremely exciting for Borthwick to give call ups to both Sela & Fasogbon. That would be huge statement of intent, but the temptation might be there to fall back on Davison.

Ultimately, I think we need to have faith in the depth that England have. To my eye, Sela looks more than ready for test rugby, and everyone keeps telling me that Fasogbon is even better (although I have my doubts).

That’s a big blow for England. Will Stuart is already sidelined .. so Steve Borthwick needs to pray to the rugby gods that Joe Hayes stays healthy!!
