All Blacks loosehead George Bower has made it clear he does not fear packing down against the Springboks in the third Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry test in Soweto and is relishing another head-to-head that could have a major bearing on the result.

With the series tied 1-1 after the Springboks won the second test after losing the opener, the scrum has become the focal point for both coaches after All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie accused the Boks of walking around the scrum. Opposite number Rassie Erasmus responded strongly in defence of his players and all week the home side has dismissed the All Blacks attacks.

Against this background, Bower told the media: “Oh, I love to scrum. I want to scrum. There’s been a lot of talk around both sides of the scrum, but it comes down to that first scrum. We’ll see who does the talking.

“I know South Africa’s mindset is they pride themselves on their scrum, and they see it as their avenue to get penalties and move up the field. For us as well, you can see after Test one our mindset for our scrum is we’re right up there as well.

“We want to challenge them. We know they’re coming, but we’re coming too. I want to scrum and I know my back five want to scrum as well. As a pack, we must just focus on our connection and tightness, our brace and our set, and hopefully that nullifies what the South Africans bring this weekend.”

Rennie has opted to make a key change to the man who will be alongside Bower with Codie Taylor, who normally leads the pre-match Haka, dropped for hooker Asafo Aumua, while Sam Darry starts at lock and Peter Lakai takes over the No. 6 jersey.

Having started a war of words about the Boks walking around the scrum, Rennie has now tried to play the controversy down, saying: “We certainly aren’t going out of our way to create narratives and I don’t see this as a war of words between myself and Rassie Erasmus.

“I said a couple of things and he said a couple of things. I’m just thinking: do I bother giving this any more air? You know, I’ve made comments, we’ve shared stuff with the officials. I think the Springboks have done the same thing, so it’s now up to the referee and his support staff to referee what he sees in front of him.”

Be good to have spider cam

to see whether either pack moves left, and cameras both sides to see who hinges or pancakes first. All of this name calling without the visuals is simply that. Part of the problem too is that the players dont play each other anymore in the club competitions. So we have no real understanding of where the strengths are. But it is fair to say that Ox, Marx, Louw and TdT are respected and feared scrumagers where ever they play. Our boys have to prove they can handle them every game. I think George and Aumua have surprised many but Lomax has disappointed. We’ll see if combining these three makes a difference.

George Bower , one of the nicest guys off the field, the ultimate people person. As a prop on the field , he has gone from being an All Black regular reserve and impact player to starting. Same progression has happened in the Crusaders. He is like a fine wine getting better with age. I believe fellow Crusader Fletcher Newell should be starting a long side him.

Just stop pushing the anti springbok narrative Rassie has done nothing wrong. At Ellis park the scrum was not a problem because you won now it’s a problem because you loose . Stop with the whinging and play rugby let’s go Bokke let’s finish them off properly

Rassie clearly went overboard (and brought his country with him) but he appeared to mellow out by what Rennie is saying after.

BTW, your logic is back the front.

If you’re so good, why do you keep collapsing under pressure? I like how much they’re talking themselves up. In the words of Cheslin Kolbe, “Ok, Ok, let’s go then”.

Yes its a bit silly to say the SB scrum is really that good when they kept collapsing. If they keep just thinking they’re good then hopefully it won’t be an advantage for them again tomorrow morning!

Keeping the hookerbreak foot firmly planted, the new WR law introduced mid July….. that none of the moaners are aware of…. Is exactly what Rennie pointed out. Hookers cant shuffle off the mark anymore to load up one side.

But the hooking foot saga doesn’t explain why the AB front row collapses or just pancakes so often. Eight resets on AB front row falling flat on their faces.

There is many a fighter that's not been scared but has been beaten badly in a fight. Let's see after Saturday. I’ve got a feeling this ref is not going to protect NZ like the last two! With all the videos doing the rounds about the illegal tactics of NZ I believe that the Springbok’s will receive more penalties. Not just at scrum time but at mauls and rucks and other breakdowns. I used to have a lot of respect for NZ but they,as well as their pundits, reporters and supporters are doing their utter best to lose it. I thought that the Irish and English were whingers…

What illegal tactics are these?

And sorry, how are you complaining about whingers while whinging LOL

Good lad, George!

If the Boks stop their walk around tactics we may be treated to a decent contest up front.

True that lets see a real scrum contest mano o mano!

On the flip side, without Gardiner a kissing cousin to the AB’s to protect them, George might need your help extracting his head from his arse
