Major League Rugby History

The inaugural season of Major League Rugby was held in 2018, when seven teams competed for the title. Since, the league has expanded as its popularity has grown. Today, 12 Major League Rugby teams compete for this prestigious prize.

Over the years, the league has experienced several other firsts. For example, the first collegiate MLR Draft took place in 2020. Similarly, in the same year, Major League Rugby teams started to form youth academies.

Major League Rugby Format

The Major League Rugby season runs from late February until early July. Since 2020, MLR has used a conference format (Western Conference and Eastern Conference).

Each of the Major League Rugby teams plays all of the other teams in their conference twice, once at home and once away. In addition, each team also plays the six teams from the other conference once.

At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each conference advance to the postseason, which consists of a wildcard game between the second and third ranked teams, followed by a play-off game between the wildcard winner and the first ranked team in the conference. The resulting play-off winners from each conference then face off in the championship final.

The league runs as a closed system, meaning that there is no promotion or relegation.
