The Men’s U20 Six Nations is the under-20s equivalent of the Six Nations Championship and features age-grade sides from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy. The competition allows fans to get a glimpse of the next Posolo Tuilagi or Sam Prendergast before they hit the senior international stage.

Played at the same time as the senior men’s competition, the U20 Six Nations has become an equally hard-fought tournament, with national pride coming to the fore.

U20 Six Nations History

An age-grade men’s Six Nations has taken place since 2004. The competition was originally instituted as the Six Nations U21 Championship, with England crowned as the inaugural winners.

Becoming the U20 Six Nations in 2008, the competition is designed to provide opportunities to the younger generation of rugby players, as well as prepare sides for the World Rugby U20 Championship, which takes place later in the calendar year.

U20 Six Nations Format

The U20 Six Nations follows the same format as the Men’s Six Nations, with fixtures replicating the corresponding fixture in the men’s tournament. For example, if Ireland and England are playing in the Six Nations, this fixture will also take place in the same week in the U20 Six Nations.

This is also the same for the tournament structure, which features a straight round-robin format that sees the team at the top of the table after five rounds of competition crowned as the winner.

Adding to the quest for glory is the ability for teams to secure a Grand Slam, which occurs when any team wins all five of their games. On top of this, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales also compete for the Triple Crown, which is awarded if any of these teams defeats all of the other home nations in the same season.
