LONG READ 'I was a loose cannon but now I am content' - Cobus Wiese on brotherhood, Bulls and Boks

For as long as they could remember, Cobus and Jasper Wiese had imagined sharing a Springbok field. Two brothers from a farm outside the sun-scorched town of Uppington in rural South Africa, carrying hay bales in the blazing heat, roughing each other up barefoot in the yard, one day wearing green together. Then, on the afternoon Cobus finally made his Test debut against Italy in July last year, Jasper lost his cool and head-butted Danilo Fischetti before his younger brother had even entered the field.

With the flash of a red card, the brothers’ moment was gone.

“Jasper’s got a hot head and we know that,” Cobus says now, smiling slightly. “But that’s what contributes to his physicality.”

There is no bitterness in the younger brother’s voice. Only empathy.

“When it happened, you kind of felt for him,” he says. “I still feel for him and I don’t blame him because it was in the heat of the moment. I know he really wanted to play a Test with me. I know he still does.”

So the dream remains suspended, which somehow feels fitting for the Wiese story. Because almost everything about Cobus Wiese’s career has arrived later than expected.

Uppington was all he knew growing up. A small, isolated world baked under year-round sun, where the weather report almost became a personality trait.

“We’d laugh watching the evening news every time Uppington was listed as the hottest place in the country,” Wiese says. “I didn’t realise it at the time, but I now know what a privilege it was growing up there. We were safe. Everyone knows everyone there. Life was simple.”

Not that things were sedate. On the farm, about 70km away from the town near the banks of the Orange River, where pecan nuts and raisins grow in abundance, the two future Springboks, their older brother by 10 years, and their younger sister, were put to work.

“I was carrying bales of hay since the age of about 12. You’re using your whole body, every muscle you have. And you work until all the hay is cleared off the land.”

The life that bred what Wiese calls “farm strength” was not all grim and Spartan. There was time for play. He recounts a story when Jasper, 15 months his senior, was caught driving the tractor when he was just nine years old.

“He could barely see over the steering wheel but he managed to get it going,” Wiese recalls. “Mom had a few choice words with Dad after that.”

The brothers were inseparable and shared a competitive spirit. They wrestled, raced each other on foot, and played rugby every chance they got. Occasionally things spilled over – “you know how siblings can be” – but there was always love.

“There was never a moment when I felt like I was walking in Jasper’s shadow,” Wiese says. “From the moment we started to think we had careers in rugby, we’ve only wanted the best for each other.

“Jasper has really made his mark in rugby by this stage. Just being associated with him is something that makes me proud.”

If anything, Jasper helped clear the path. South African rugby still tends to funnel talent through its traditional elite schools – Paarl Boys’ and Rondebosch in the Cape, Affies and Pretoria Boys up north, Grey College in Bloemfontein. For 129 years Uppington High has existed slightly separate from that elite ecosystem. Its proximity to Namibia means it has produced more players for the Welwitschias than the Springboks, though Tiaan Strauss broke the glass ceiling in 1992 before Jasper followed suit in 2021.

Cobus acknowledges the “pattern” that exists in South African rugby pathways, but rejects the idea the route is closed to outsiders. “If you work, you’ll get an opportunity,” he says simply.

I had no discipline. I just went wherever the ball was and expected my physicality to carry me through.

Jasper perhaps had the harder road initially, but by the time Cobus made SA Schools in 2014, professional rugby already had its eye on the younger Wiese too. He signed with an agent at 18 and gradually moved into the system via Western Province and the Stormers. Even then, there was a feeling he needed refinement. Or restraint.

“I was definitely a loose cannon,” he admits of his younger self. “I had no discipline. I just went wherever the ball was and expected my physicality to carry me through.”

At 6ft 6ins, and weighing 275 lbs (125kg), there was always an attraction to collision, to involvement, to the emotional edge of rugby. The challenge became learning how to channel it.

“The older you get, and the more experience you get, you kind of learn how to steer that aggression into the right direction,” he says. “Rugby is still a physical contact sport. There’s going to be confrontation.”

At the time, he had received his first Springbok invite in 2018 and seemed destined for rapid elevation. Then he broke his neck at the Stormers, the biggest of what became a series of long-term injuries, and instead of accelerating towards Test rugby, his career stalled abruptly.

The injury alone would have tested him. But in 2019, the Wiese family suffered a far more devastating blow when Cobus and Jasper’s sister died when her car was struck by a bus in Cape Town.

Cobus raises the subject himself and doesn’t change the subject until he’s made his feelings known. “I’d give my family the world if I could,” he says. “Everything I do, I do for them.”

For a period, rugby became secondary. The grief hit the family hard, deepening a bond that had already been forged through years of isolation, physical work and shared ambition. It also sharpened his perspective. Rugby was no longer simply about collision or conquest. It became about responsibility and career earnings. By 2020, he left South Africa for Sale Sharks in pursuit of pounds and entered the most transformative period of his life.

Manchester could scarcely have been further from Uppington. Grey skies instead of dry heat. Endless rain instead of open veld. But the timing helped. He arrived at 23, newly engaged, still young enough to experience England with curiosity rather than homesickness. He was brought over by Steve Diamond to join a raft of fellow South Africans, but four months later he had a new coach, someone who would change him as a man and a rugby player.

What do you do when the ball’s going away from you? He’d always ask me that question.

“He’s truly a special person,” Wiese says of Alex Sanderson, who returned to the north of England having won everything the club game had to offer with Saracens. “He cares about the people of the north. He’d make sure we knew who we were playing for. I liked that.”

If Sale sharpened Wiese tactically, Sanderson matured him emotionally. The Sharks coach saw beyond the volatility and taught him how to contribute when he was not directly involved.

“What do you do when the ball’s going away from you? He’d always ask me that question,” Wiese says.

By the time Wiese returned to South Africa to join the Bulls in 2024, he was no longer simply an athletic enforcer. He had become a modern hybrid forward: versatile enough to play lock or flank, hardened by Europe, emotionally steadier and tactically smarter. And crucially, content.

“Not complacent, but content,” he stresses. “There is a difference. We just had our second child four months ago. I love my life. I feel so grateful for everything I have. I know how blessed we are.”

There is no desperation when he speaks about the Springboks now. Only gratitude and duty.

“If I’m fortunate enough to play for the Boks again,” he says, “it would just be to kind of do justice to the jersey. I remember [Springboks forwards coach] Daan Human saying, ‘It’s not the jersey you put on that defines you, it’s the one you take off’. If I can pull on that jersey again, I will do anything to take it off and hand it back in a better place.”

Which brings the story back to that opening scene. The brothers still have not had their full Springbok moment together. Not really. Not yet.

But somewhere beyond the glare of Test rugby, beyond Loftus and Twickenham and the noise of professional sport, you can still picture it clearly: two boys on a farm outside Uppington, loading hay bales beneath a reddening Northern Cape sky, dreaming together before either of them knew how long the road would become.
