Global Youth Sevens: New Zealand and Australia qualify, son of All Black great shines
Day two of the Global Youth Sevens has seen more dominance from Australia, and New Zealand have now joined the party with some strong wins.
After Australia dominated the trans-Tasman showdowns on day one with wins to the tune of 24-19 in the Boys grade and 27-21 in the Girls’, the winning momentum was continued on day two.
Australia U18 Boys made short work of NZ Fiji Boys in the opening game of the day, claiming a 34-7 win. The team then backed up that effort with a 29-19 win over Tongan Barbarians, overcoming an early 19-7 deficit with much-improved discipline in the second period. A 21-17 victory over New Zealand Bucks, despite a two-man disadvantage, completed the day for Australia. Treyvon Pritchard played another starring role in the day’s results as the Aussies qualified for the semi-finals.
New Zealand U18 Boys put up a big score against Hawkes Bay Saracens, with Matt Fleming’s pace stealing the show for two tries. The win also qualified the Kiwis for the semi-finals.
The New Zealand U18 Girls ran up the scoreboard with 41 unanswered points against the NZ Fijian Girls, before claiming a 26-14 win over Pacific Tribe Queensland.
Both New Zealand and Australia’s girls’ teams have games to play on Sunday morning before the semi-final matchups are confirmed.
Elsewhere in the competition, the son of an All Black icon made some waves with his form. Taking after his father, Doug, Charles Howlett is starting to make a name for himself in the rugby world, adding to his growing reputation at the Global Youth Sevens this weekend.
The youngster has been generating some hype for his flying pace with Auckland Grammar in the schoolboy scene, the school his father once attended before becoming the leading try-scorer in All Blacks history.
Playing for the Grammar Tec Lions this weekend, Howlett’s electric pace made for quite the highlight on day two.
