Wallaroos finish 'tough' WXV tour with emphatic win over Scotland

The Wallaroos were delighted to finish off their “tough” European tour with a win over Scotland in the WXV Global Series.

Over the past fortnight, Australia have lost out to England and France, but ended their time in the northern hemisphere with a 30-10 victory against Dave Butchers’ Scotland in Edinburgh.

Desiree Miller, Samantha Wood, Brianna Hoy and Faitala Moleka were all try-scorers in the Scottish capital as the visitors overturned a 10-5 half-time deficit to subject their hosts to a third loss in a row this September.

“Really pleased to finish off what’s been a really tough campaign for us,” Michael Ruthven, Wallaroos assistant coach, said.

“The girls have certainly been progressing in our performance week to week, so it’s a really pleasing way to finish.

“We certainly had to work hard for it, but I thought the girls really increased the tempo in the second half and were able to score some tries.”

It was an historic day for the Wallaroos overall. Michaela Leonard became the first player to represent the team 50 times and Desiree Miller’s try saw the wing become the first player to score 100 international points for the team.

Getting a win has also meant that Australia have finished the first stage of their WXV Global Series campaign on a high. Against England, a bright first-half display could not be backed up and the side lost 48-15.

A week later they failed to take advantage of a hugely indisciplined France team and lost 29-26. Like a week earlier, they led at the halfway stage.

In Edinburgh it was a lot more complete performance from the Wallaroos, who for large swathes of the fixture managed the game well.

It is also a result that means the Wallaroos have a 100% win record against Scotland, who they will welcome to Australia for a two-Test series in October.

“We know what Scotland will bring to us – a lot of physicality, some game driving – but hey, we’ve got the skill set and we’ve got the team to bring it to them,” Faitala Moleka, who was awarded player of the match, said.

“I’m excited. Looking back on that second half, I think the girls can really take that and use that as confidence as we go back home.”

It wasn't emphatic by any stretch of the imagination because they still left a lot of points out there and could easily have punished Scotland's errors more ruthlessly.

But what was encouraging is that when they had the numerical advantage they didn't waste it by narrowing up their attack. They continued to work the play and stick to their game plan which resulted in 3 very good tries.

Although they found themselves behind going into the half, it didn't feel like they were all that far away from the contest. They just needed to be a bit more clinical in capitalising on all their possession and field position and the points would come.

And come they certainly did with a massive second half paving the way to a solid victory. In the end it played out more or less how you expect contests between two relatively close teams in terms of skill and ability to play out.

I was actually surprised that they won quite handsomely in the end because I was actually concerned that they were going to lose. I didn't think it was more likely than them winning but I did think it would be a lot more touch and go than it was.

It still feels like the on field leadership is lacking at times and they still have too much tendency to sabotage themselves when they should be comfortably going on with it

But they got the important win in the north and can now look to getting back home and preparing for the Scots to come visit. This is the last throes of a soon to be past era as come the new year they are all part of a new fully professional setup under a new coach.

They can hit the ground running off these remaining two tests in style should they not only win but actually get to showcase the level of performance that they intend to bring going forwards and which we all know they are capable of.

Much like when Wales visited prior to the WXV2 tournament which the Roos went on to dominate in and ultimately win, the Scots will hopefully bring the level of challenge that they've been able to produce during recent 6N and for last year's World Cup.

While they should deservedly think of themselves as favourites, the Roos need to start delivering consistency and it begins now.

There's every reason to think that Scotland is coming here to determined to win and will make whatever necessary changes they believe they need to make in order to get that result.

So hopefully that means they'll bring a particularly strong touring party and our girls will get tested to the level they need to be in preparation for next year's Pac 4, which is just around the corner.
