All Blacks dependency on Cam Roigard means he should sit out Super Rugby

Has one player ever been as important to the All Blacks as Cam Roigard is right now?

Even the legendary Dan Carter might not be able to claim as much.

The All Blacks won the 2011 Rugby World Cup with the fourth-string No.10 Stephen Donald guiding the team home against France after Carter went down with injury in the pool stages.

Although Carter’s performances were instrumental in going back-to-back in 2015, the 2015 side is regarded as the most complete rugby team of all time. Prime Beauden Barrett was the back up No.10.

The KOKO Show discuss the upcoming Wallabies Test against the Springboks. Watch the latest episode on RugbyPass TV now.

In 2026, under new head coach Dave Rennie in the up-tempo, all-out attack system, there is a big difference between what the side can do with Cam Roigard on the field and without. He is the chief playmaker, along with Jordie Barrett, in a new style built around them.

The All Blacks coaches know this; they wrapped the 25-year-old in cotton wool for all of the warm-up games in South Africa. It simply wasn’t worth the risk.

There are probably three irreplaceable players in the All Blacks right now: Cam Roigard, Ardie Savea and Jordie Barrett. Will Jordan would arguably be the fourth.

These players have no comparable, and the next player on the depth chart offers significantly less. But no position is more pronounced than halfback, where the gap between Roigard and the rest is massive.

The All Blacks are right up there with the Springboks, as the first three Tests in South Africa showed, and winning a one-off quarter-final is entirely possible but only if the best of the best are available.

It’s hard to see the All Blacks beating the Springboks, and then France, if Roigard is not on the field at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. This makes preserving him and possibly a few others a high priority in the World Cup year.

This will be more difficult than usual as southern hemisphere nations have given up their advantage in 2027. They have decided to ramp up their competition when they usually reduce the number of Tests.

The All Blacks used to play four Tests before a World Cup, a reduced three-game Rugby Championship and one extra Bledisloe Cup fixture.

In 2023 they opted for one more at Twickenham against South Africa, for a total of five, which cost them tighthead Tyrel Lomax to injury and a 35-7 record loss.

In 2027, the SANZAAR nations have opted to return to a full Rugby Championship, six Tests each, while the All Blacks have a third Bledisloe Cup scheduled for the ANZAC weekend.

What used to be four Tests has now become seven, with more warm-ups yet to be determined.

The northern hemisphere nations have been the ones to shoot themselves in the foot doing this. Facing the prospect of losing November revenue, they scheduled a bunch of summer Tests against each other.

In 2019 Wales lost flyhalf Gareth Anscombe to a knee injury before he even made it onto the plane to Japan. By the time Wales reached the semi-final, they were decimated by injuries to starters.

In 2023, France lost the World Cup before the World Cup even began, losing star flyhalf Roman Ntamack to a knee injury in a meaningless warm-up game against Scotland.

Ntamack was arguably the best flyhalf in the world at the time, certainly top three at the position, and critical to France’s 9-10 combination built at Toulouse. Dupont is much more dangerous with him.

Mathieu Jalibert was not the world-class player he is now, and it was Jalibert who crumbled in the quarter-final loss to South Africa with critical errors in Ntamack’s absence.

France have learnt their lesson, with the FFR agreeing to terms with the LNR to protect 33 players over the Top 14 season heading into the 2027 Rugby World Cup. For the first time, they will manage workloads and limit Tests for those they deem too valuable.

With just one Rugby World Cup win by the Northern Hemisphere teams in 2003 to England, the results suggest that playing less before a World Cup contributes to results.

Now with the All Blacks playing more Tests before the World Cup, how are they going to protect Roigard and others? Are they going to play a full Super Rugby Pacific season and seven Tests before the most important campaign in four years?

It’s been two unsuccessful World Cup campaigns in a row, leading to an eight-year absence of the William Webb Ellis trophy in New Zealand.

In 2019, they were ambushed by a strong England team. They also played well below their standard, and the selection of Scott Barrett at blindside proved telling.

Not including veterans Ben Smith, Ryan Crotty, and younger stars like Rieko Ioane seemed costly on the day. Sonny Bill Williams was used off the bench. Owen Franks and Ngane Laumape were left at home to begin with.

In 2023, the margins were incredibly small, and they almost pulled off the greatest win in All Black history, fighting with 14 players for 80 per cent of the game. They shouldn’t have been in it after a red card to Sam Cane, and two missed kicks at goal cruelly cost them the win.

Those World Cups show that you need every advantage you can, and exposing the squad to more Test rugby before the World Cup seems like a foolish expedition.

They don’t have the depth to risk the very best All Blacks anymore.

Maybe just rest everybody and have simulated games🤪

Sorry I only read the headline and skipped down, as it was just BS looking for clicks with bs.

If NZ success relies on the cheating Roigard then NZ rugby has fallen further than anyone has realised.

the 2015 side is regarded as the most complete rugby team of all time - complete and utter drivel.

S
Skinny Pins 17 days ago

The continued attempt by the media to build Roigard up is nuts. He was average at best in South Africa. Quite poor often in fact. He is simply an “OK" halfback by international standards. Young Dylan Pledger from Otago looks a far more world class player in the making. Roigard, like Love, got revealed to be not all he is hyped up as during RGR. Simple as that.

J
JW 17 days ago

Can’t remember if you’re a kiwi or not but Roigard played a very unfamiliar game in SA, so you’d be wrong to compare that with his previous games/form. If he was OK then that bodes well for his ‘standard’.

But yes that has been happening a lot the last half dozen years as they look for someone to take the gloom away, if just temporarily.

It has been tried before and it doesn’t work. Players, to be at their best, need to be match fit. If you take policies like this, players are as likely to get injured in their first match back or even in training. The sensible policy, if you are thinking contingencies, it to build up strength in depth. I can’t believe, for example, that Kyle Preston hasn’t started a match.

J
JW 17 days ago

Yep fair call. To be fair to the other side though, those were probably very naive implementations and it is done a lot better in this day and age.

J
Jmann 18 days ago

hmmmm - I dunno. ABs won 2011 RWC (deservedly so) without their Top 3 1st 5/8ths. Perhaps limit his pre-season; that seems to be where a lot of injuries happen. He needs to be playing.

Why do Rugby Pass continue to publish this numpty.

T
TokoRFC 18 days ago

Bit click baity, as per.

But I do agree that playing a full rugby championship and warm ups before the World Cup is nuts

T
TT 18 days ago

Yep, Roigard's positives a way ahead of the next option.

BUT, he has his faults & the most repeative & obvious during the GR tour was regularly running away from support.

J
JW 17 days ago

That’s what theyre going for. It’s a strat and problem with his team mates. If they can unlock a Dupont style of rubgy as one knit unit boy watchout.

Hence Cam needs to be playing every game almost.

There is a big difference between Super Rugby and Top14. That’s why one of them is the best championship while the over is clearly not. Top14 is longer, harder, and protecting players is a necessity, even without a WC year. Top14 players are playing too much. Far too much. Hell, Top14 (more intense than others championships and longer), useless ChCups we tend to win at en heavy price (winning both Top14 and ChCup is a nightmare), November/Summer series, 6 Nations we tend to win too, final phases of top14… Ain't the case in Super Rugby. + Not playing for a long time is also having negative consequences. It's not because France did what they did recently that it’s useful for other nations to follow. We did that because in OUR situation it’s beneficial to do so. It doesn’t mean everyone on the planet is in the same situation. Of course Roigard should be cautious (like everyone). And his club should take care of him (idk but burning an international player seems quite stupid, and I bet the Canes are not). But stop playing for a while ? That’s more than stupid.

PS : one exemple in France, Louis Bielle Biarrey. He wants to play the Olympics and the World Cup. He signed again this summer. That was difficult. I bet that in the negociations it was said he would not be playing too much top14 or CC to compete both RWC and Olympics. Meaning Union Bordeaux Bègles will not have one of their best weapons for most of this season. Not that he will not play at all…

Don’t know T14 too hard bro it pays the bills!

So, by that logic Ben Smith should take a break from writing articles for about a season or so. Maybe more - just so he can prove the point with Roigard

J
JW 18 days ago

All good points Ben but Roigard is very raw playing his version of a Dupont running playmaker game, he needs far more time in the saddle.

He’s tough too, perhaps most top ABs will only play 2 or 3 of those 7 tests next year.

O
OtagomanII 18 days ago

These type of ideas have led to fewer people attending and watching domestic rugby in NZ. The rot for this aspect really starts in 2007 when the ABs were absent for half of the comp when Henry wanted them out of the comp altogether for the world cup that ended in a quarter final exit. People get the message this is not important so they will not spend the money.

G
GRB13 18 days ago

Then they wonder why Super Rugby loses so much money if they do stupid things like this!

J

They don’t really wonder, they know it’s a bunch of meaningless teams designed to improve All Blacks.

fighting with 14 players for 80 per cent of the game

In actual fact, the Springboks lost both Kolisi and Kolbe to yellow cards too, with the result that the All Black had a numerical disadvantage for approximately 43 minutes.

That is 54% of the game.

Ben, as a former financial analyst & auditor in retail banking, you know you can do better son.

J

He could be re-signed on a 5 year contract now having an advanced sabbatical in place as a result, if that is an issue. Much better to give him one after Lions tour though.

G
Graham Laws 18 days ago

Really can't see resting any player completely doing any good. After resting a player from playing he could get injured in the first game he plays when returning. His work load could certainly be monitored and rested between certain games.

C
Cantab 18 days ago

You are right. Rugby is a contact sport and the dilemma is that not playing may well mean a player is not as match fit as desirable whereas over exposure risks injury. Note that in the modern game all teams tend to carry an injury list anyway . For that reason the top sides usually have several players in reserve to cover all positions. The ABs have several players to cover the halfback position even though they may not all have Roigards all round excellence.

J
JW 18 days ago

You could be changing the likelyhood by as much as 10% and as little as 1 or 2% managed with kid gloves.

Roigard is one of those players that can just fire all the time without rugby though, but I’d like him to develop another years worth on his potential.

O

I’d rest Frizzell, geez him and Narawa were both very good this weekend.

J
Jordon 18 days ago

I give Ben the benefit because i find it amusing him triggering bok fans. But this is the stupidest idea ever. Im sure any athelte in any sport will tell you they are fittest when they are playing regularly. It’s rugby. Guys will get injured.

H
HS 18 days ago

Roigard gets injured quite often, or at least he acts like he is. Not great if a player who acts like he does is the one the ABs can’t do without.

P
PB 18 days ago

You are easily amused 🤔, quite a deep chap you are 🤣

G
GM 18 days ago

Agreed, Ben. Take Rassie’s lead and bring your top XV to the RWC first test a wee bit undertone. They might still be less than peak in the second game against Oz - and that would be a very good game to lose.

J
JW 18 days ago

To be fair I see SA coming in hot and only fielding B team players through the pool play. Top team will only come out for the knockout games.
