Two-game USA series confirmed for Stephen Larkham's Australia A

Australia A will head to the United States for a two-game tour against the USA in late October, with the games to be played in Nashville and New Jersey.

The development team’s star-studded coaching ticket was announced two weeks ago, with Brumbies boss Stephen Larkham leading a group that includes Western Force counterpart Simon Cron and departing Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt.

The trio will lead the Wallabies’ next-best talent into two games against the world No.16 USA team, who will host the 2031 Rugby World Cup.

The two fixtures come as double-headers, aligning with the WXV Global Series to feature alongside USA matches against Italy and world champions, England.

“USA Rugby is excited to showcase USA Eagles’ energy in new cities across the United States this October,” USA Rugby CEO Bill Goren said.

“We’re thrilled to host the WXV Global Series home games in Texas, Tennessee, and New Jersey, and welcome international powerhouses Italy and England for some exciting action.

“Furthermore, as part of two doubleheader events, the USA Men’s Eagles taking on Australia XV will add to the excitement as fans get the chance to experience top-tier rugby on US soil as we prepare for the 2031 and 2033 Rugby World Cups.”

The USA is set to face Portugal, Zimbabwe and Spain in the inaugural World Rugby Nations Cup next month.

Australia A, on the other hand, enjoyed a seismic 71-7 win over Japan XV last year, having lost to England A 38 -17 in 2024.

SA made plenty of errors too. More than us. Our problem was half our line breaks led directly to turnovers. We couldn’t keep the pressure because half the time we got it right and split them open we gave it back immediately.

The running of the ball out of their own 22, but kicking it away what seemed like every time they were on attack in the Pumas half, was borderline insane. It was like someone accidentally photocopied the game instructions in reverse. How else could they be so stupid ?

Kicking the ball away is a fine strategy if you have excellent recovery tactics and you are regathering at least 75% of those balls. The Wallabies have an absolutely hopeless recovery strategy and without looking at the stats, I’d guess they’d be lucky to recover 25% of them. So therefore the strategy is moronic.

Nice on paper but Tosi can’t scrum at the moment, and despite being 25kg heavier doesn’t seem to have the same impact as Numia around the park.

If you are doing 6-2 it’s risky not to have a hybrid player who can cover somewhere in the backs in an emergency.

Yes agree PMcD. One thing that may irritate NB 😂- but does the last test confirm that the ABs need to go 6-2 and bring that extra mass on in the last 20? I thought Jacobson was spent and Vaai not to far behind by minute 60 - I actually cant recall them doing much at all late in the game. But Sititi and Holland were powerhouses - standouts in a listing ship. We MUST go 6-2 in this test - a fresh lock and two loosies with Rieko covering centre and wing.

Yes can see the logic in that GVF. You may recall in our previous posts I referred to collective forward mass (height and weight) and the fact that by going 6-2 with Esterheizen playing in the forwards, the Boks effectively had another Kolisi sized unit of fresh forward power over the ABs. This is part of that too. It is why I believe the ABs cannot afford to persist with the 5-3 combination - in addition to the fact that the Boks are better trained for the set piece and maul, that extra available power makes a big difference. I have assembled a starting and impact forward pack that can provide that mass - EDG, Taukeiaho, Newell, Holland, Paddy, Vaa’i, Blackadder, Lakai, Aumua, Bower, Tosi, Lord, Parker and Sititi. It literally comes out ahead of the Boks packs on “mass” but only just.

Desi Miller is a great ambassador, but is on a hiding to nothing having to speak to reporters. What is disappointing, I don’t think coach Tim Walsh has spoken to the media post the Black Ferns game. He did chat to RugbyPass about what the 7s players bring but hasn’t addressed the most important issues eg developing the competitiveness of the forward.

They have them coming through but they have either been injured, or not selected by Borthwick.

Given they play Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith at starting 9 & 10, they have a young 9 called McPartland playing at Saints, who does the replacement role as a trio, or alternatively Raffi Querke has just signed for Newcastle and he has a lot of potential if he can stay fit.

It might do. I believe Darry and Lord need to impose themselves more. And unfortunately Tuipolutu seems to be passed his best. Or maybe the flaws in his game that have kept him from being a first pick are still apparent.

You and I will have to disagree re Bower and Numia. I think Numia has had four games on tour and I haven't been impressed. No matter how good a prop is around the field he still has to scrum and maul effectively in my opinion. But perhaps I'm too old school.

RFU overseas player rule gets the backing of PREM boss

I really respect Rob Baxter as a coach, and don’t think anyone can knock what he's achieved, however he did say that selfishly he looks to Exeter 1st and IMHO therein lays the issue. All the prem clubs take multi million £ p/a from the RFU (totally funded by England rugby Internationals) then spend many of those millions on foreign, non EQP players whilst demanding that any England player is picked from the 40 to 65 % of players that they make available. Fin Russell (fantastic player) taking £1M p/a of RFU money and keeping an EQP out. I may well be wrong but if you demand all England players come from 10 self centred businesses and take multi millions for that right then perhaps you should limit your squad to (max) 4 non EQPs and grow the England team's depth and get them nearer to ABs, France, Ireland and the Boks

It's a waste of time if Rennie doesn't learn from the good and the bad. Carter had a direct hand in two of the AB tries last game to offset his misreads, but he doesn't have a defensive game. It's a constant.

The problem lies in conditioning. The AB’s do not condition for anaerobic effort the Boks do so if the AB’s have to do some heavy lifting for quite a few minutes after that they are not at their aerobic best and that’s where their weakness lies. Case in point. They have to scrum hard three times in five minutes then comes the Springbok try scoring maul and the AB’s are out on their feet. They can hardly keep standing. Go and watch that over again. Early on when they were fresh they defended the `Bok maul easily - twice and even milked a penalty off the Bok maul. They are not rugby fit unless you take the heavy lifting out of the game.
