Gloucester are battling to keep hold of Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams, who is now in the final year of his contract at Kingsholm but is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him in the West Country beyond June.

Williams, 30, joined the Cherry & Whites on a two-year deal from Cardiff at the start of last season, and his brilliant form saw him crowned PREM Rugby Player of the Season.

It also earned him a place on the Lions tour of Australia, one of only two Welsh stars — Ospreys ace Jac Morgan, who is also coming to the end of his deal, being the other — to make Andy Farrell’s series-winning squad.

He played against Argentina in Dublin before suffering a tour-ending hamstring injury against the Western Force but has made a full recovery and played in Gloucester’s three PREM Rugby games this season.

He told BBC Gloucestershire before the start of the season that he was trying to put the disappointment of his tour-ending injury firmly behind him.

“I try not to dwell on anything that goes wrong; you can get bogged down in that. I don’t think it’s healthy from my point of view anyway.

“I’m proud to get selected for the squad in the first place, proud to play for the Lions. I’ve done that. I think of the positives rather than get bogged down in the negatives,” he said.

But Williams and Gloucester are yet to hit the heights of last season, losing all three games so far and taking only two bonus points, with only Newcastle Red Bulls, who are yet to pick up a point, below them in the table.

Gloucester were reported to be willing to make him the club’s highest-paid player to ward off interest, but he is understood to have a huge offer — thought to be from breakaway competition R360 — on the table.

Gloucester, who named Williams club captain this summer, have been making tentative enquiries about potential replacements, especially as Wales weren’t one of the unions to give their players a “us-or-them” R360 ultimatum.
