The All Blacks aren’t mincing their words; this Pumas team is a different beast. After downing the British & Irish Lions to further what has been a historically strong 12-month period, Argentina has their opponents on high alert.

One of the famous victories Felipe Contepomi’s men have claimed over the past year was over the All Blacks, and on Kiwi soil. Wins over Australia, South Africa, England and Ireland followed.

Winger Sevu Reece played 49 minutes of last year’s Rugby Championship loss to the Pumas in Wellington, and debuted against Los Pumas in Argentina back in 2019.

He remembers the occasion for its energetic atmosphere and is hoping to feel that same energy in Corboda this weekend.

“I was nervous and excited as well. It was a close game, but from my memory, the Argentinian crowd was unbelievable. Before the games start, they start singing till the end. They don’t sit down, they don’t stop.

“Hopefully, they bring the same energy and support on Saturday.”

As for the team they’ll be facing, Reece says this Pumas outfit is not one to underestimate.

“We watched Argentina beat the Lions. They’re a different team now. They’ve come a long way, and they’re tough to go up against.

“They play a nice style of rugby. Everyone can run fast, kick the ball, and they’ve got my friend Pablo [Matera], that guy can kick the ball as well. That’s just how special and talented they are. They’re so skilful and we respect that.”

Matera and Reece were teammates at the Crusaders in 2022, winning the title together under now All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson.

The coach has changed selection ideologies in 2025, keeping players on their toes with new faces rewarded for their form, while some established talents have been left to prove their form in the NPC.

Argentina have also made some big selection calls, with Matías Moroni, Tomás Lavanini, and Gonzalo Bertranou all missing the cut as newcomers make their mark.

Reece says the new selections have made the All Blacks environment even more comeptitive.

“We want to keep growing every Test we play. The boys have been training hard, and we are excited to go out there this weekend and showcase the direction of our game.

“The competition in the All Blacks is very tough, and no one is guaranteed the jersey. We have a good group, a very talented group, and anyone can play.

“But it makes it so much better because every training session we go hard, we compete, and we help each other.”
