Hi Nick, excellent article as always. In this match, its 3 players targetting 2 jackal threats. But what if the opposition has multiple Jackal threats like South Africa, and even across the backline, how can a team address that?

I’m not convincd Leinster have the personnel to manage that kind of desire against the better scrums they will face… Jack Boyle always runs around the side of the scrum at LHP and refs will pick up on that, while Clarkson looks a bit up and down on the other side. Interesting one to keep an eye on!

Athletics/sports tights, but could be taken as a sign he wanted to stay within his comfort zone. He might have been better wearing the “Pretty Pollys”….assuming he could get the offloads in with 15 outraged Scots chasing him down.

I was at the Leinster - Harlequins match and the Leinster pack wanted scrums. They got pinged a bit but the signs are that there is a desire to address it and indications of behind the scene focus (at least before that match. They won’t be doing that tomorrow against Ulster. It will be win at all costs.)

Dupont in tights? Maybe he’s not the same man he was prior to injury! 🤣

That loss to the Boks will certainly have focused Irish minds, as will the loss to France in Dublin at the start of the year… Les Bleus will be vulnerable after an underwhelming autumn, so this one could be a real nailbiter.

Not so much, though if you choose to keep the Principality stadium open the elements will still play their part. Several stadia in Australia and South Africa are very similar too…

This game was played in a community stadium which doubles up for athletics, so it’s quite open and round. May club stadia are still built along the same lines…

Fascinating stuff Nick. It feels like when Joe Schmidt’s end date as an international coach looms, performance levels drop. It happened with Ireland in 2019 and it’s happening now with Australia.

I don't have access to Leinster matches at the moment but I've read enough of your columns about them to know that the emphasis has changed from attack to dominating games on defence under Jacques Nienaber.

Great analysis. The breakdown enabled everything that followed. The couple of times they were in pick and go territory within the 5m line the Glasgow clear out was also used to tie up defenders resulting in the two middle tries. The line breaks for these got them into that zone. I thought Stafford McDowells carries were very effectual. There was one where he could have easily off-loaded to his left but he played the percentage and recycled allowing Glasgow to soon get to that 5m zone and score.

Dupont seemed to be keeping himself out of the physicality (understandably given the layoff) until his team went behind. Also, If Glasgow needed any confirmation that the Touloussaine boys might be out of their comfort zone in the Scottish wind and rain it was the talisman Dupont wearing tights.
