Tandy adds 3 Wales stars to staff, including Grand Slam-winning Lion
Wales head coach Steve Tandy has added former Wales internationals Duncan Jones, Dan Lydiate and Rhys Patchell to his coaching staff.
The trio will join the national set-up on an interim basis before returning to their clubs at the end of November.
Former Wales loosehead prop Duncan Jones will join Tandy’s team as scrum coach. The 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam winner has held the same role with the Ospreys since 2018.
Another Grand Slam winner, Lydiate, will work alongside Tandy on the Welsh defence over the Autumn Nations Series, where Wales host Argentina, Japan, the All Blacks and South Africa. The 2013 British & Irish Lions series winner retired from rugby at the end of last season, having served as a player-coach for the Dragons.
Another former Wales international who recently joined Lydiate in retirement, Patchell, will join the staff as kicking coach. The former fly-half works alongside Lydiate at the Dragons, whom he joined after announcing his retirement in September.
With Matt Sherratt and Danny Wilson already part of Tandy’s set-up, Neil Jenkins is the final addition to the team, where he will continue his role as skills coach.
“I’m delighted that Duncan, Dan and Rhys will be joining us for the Quilter Nations Series and I’d like to thank the Ospreys and Dragons for allowing them to take up this opportunity with Wales,” Tandy said.
“I’m excited to have the full coaching team confirmed for our four games this autumn and I know we’re all relishing the chance to get stuck into our campaign.”
WRU director of rugby and elite performance Dave Reddin added: “Bringing Duncan, Dan and Rhys in for the autumn to work alongside Steve, Danny and Matt gives us a good balance in the coaching team.
“We said at the outset that we might have some interim appointments and this is the right option for us at this point.”
Wales get their campaign underway against Argentina on November 9.
