'Super fan' Ruaridh McConnochie to move into coaching
Bath have announced the double departure of first-team players, winger Ruaridh McConnochie and scrum-half Louis Schreuder, who will leave the club at the end of this season.
Both have played key squad roles since Johann van Graan arrived at The Rec in the summer of 2022, with McConnochie stepping up whenever Will Muir or Joe Cokanasiga have been out, while South African Schreuder has provided experienced back-up to club captain Ben Spencer at nine.
While veteran Schreuder, 35, is still hoping to secure a new deal elsewhere, McConnochie’s race is run. The 2016 Olympics silver medallist joined Bath from England 7s in 2018 and has scored 29 tries in 95 appearances in all competitions, including six in the Premiership Rugby Cup-winning campaign this season.
“Almost 10 years to the day since I walked through the doors at England 7s, I now feel it’s the right time to step away from a career that has given me memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
“I appreciate not every player has the ability to retire on their own terms, and so after much thought, I feel very lucky to be able to make the call myself.
“I feel incredibly privileged to have experienced all I have done throughout my career, and I know this would not have been possible without the help and support of my family, friends, and coaches.
“Now into the world of coaching and education I go, with some life-changing memories and experiences to look back on. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Schreuder, said: “The last three years have been a privilege and pleasure at this club. I am grateful to have worked with so many special people and players along the way. The club is in a very good place and the best is yet to come.”
“The Bath fans have been incredible, and I wish everyone associated with the club nothing but success going forward. It’s been an honour to represent the badge and be part of such a proud rugby tradition.”
