Steve Borthwick weighs in on tunnel incident after huge accusation

England head coach Steve Borthwick has said that flanker Tom Curry’s “character is impeccable” after his counterpart Felipe Contepomi labelled him a “bully” following the Pumas’ 27-23 loss at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

The Argentina boss was unable to hide his frustration post-match, not only regarding a late tackle from the Englishman on his full-back Juan Cruz Mallía, but also over being allegedly “hit” by him in the tunnel after the match.

The alleged incident came after a post-match brawl spilled into the tunnel, leading the Pumas boss to throw out some significant accusations.

Not only did he accuse the British and Irish Lion of swearing at him and shoving him, but added that it’s “probably part of his nature to bully people.”

While Borthwick admitted he did see the incident between the pair, he bluntly refuted the attack on Curry’s character post-match.

“I’m clearly aware there was an incident,” the England boss said. “I didn’t see it, I wasn’t there, I was in the changing room at the time. I’m aware of it. I wouldn’t want an incident like that to be the centre of attention of what was a tough, hard Test match where two teams went at it. That’s all I’ve got to say about it.

“Anyone in this room that’s had any contact with Tom Curry knows his character is impeccable. He’s a fantastic team man and a respectful guy. I think Tom Curry’s character is unquestionable.”

Like his coach, England captain Maro Itoje could not shed any more light on the incident either, but said that “emotions are always flying high”.

“I’m unaware of what happened in the tunnel,” Itoje said. “But post-game on the pitch, emotions are always flying high. You see that in almost every game whether that’s Test match or club game or even National One, so that’s part and parcel of rugby, I guess.”

Wondering if its a cheaper cheap shot than Marcos Kremer’s 2021 shot that broke Jaden Hendrikse’s ankle.

We are all assuming what happened in the tunnel…

The fact is that Curry made a late hit on the fullback Malia and the referee and the TMO ignored it. We can’t deny that it deserved a yellow card. Los Pumas end up playing 14 against 15 during the most important part of the game.

I accept the comment that late hits by Matera or Kramer could happen, but they still should get a yellow card.

Contepomi (it’s obvious) was frustrated about the “no call”. After the game, during the field interview, he also mentioned other game hits that the ref and the TMO ignored to review.

If they claim that they are going to protect the players, then do it.

It wasn’t ignored it was a penalty and Curry was committed. Maybe Malia who plays in the top 14 is overworked as most players are in the top 14. It’s full contact sport and rugby is hard hitting, player miss management obviously as they used all replacements and so had to finish with only 14 those replacements are first and foremost for player cover for injuries not tactical changes. Contepomi should be carefull what he wishes for as they may change the law to only changing players when injured rather than when tired or for tactical. Meaning all players must stay on the field for the full eighty and only subbed when injured. That would do for the Argies pack for sure.

No we can deny it merited a yellow as it clearly did not. Kremmer hit Ford late most of the game, did we cry about this? Sour grapes from the coach has caused him to incite an incident in the tunnel. He should be dealt with for causing the issue

I appreciate Pollock is a young and immature player but he needs to curb his ‘enthusiasm’ or at the least, his older more experienced colleagues need to have a little word in his ear. He always seems to be at the centre of niggling incidents which have no place in rugby and I fear he will be targeted in the future by others, who will be offended by his attitude and actions.

The Argentinean lot have been miserable loosers since 1982! Every England game has argiebargie

I suspect Contepomi will be a bit embarrassed at his overreaction this morning.

Because Truth hurts, and if truth offends, that's on you, not the one saying what offends you.
