Sergeal Petersen bags brace as Bulls paste Zebre Parma

Bulls strengthened their hopes of securing a home quarter-final in the United Rugby Championship with a comprehensive bonus-point 63-24 win over Zebre in Pretoria. The South Africans crossed nine times through Sergeal Petersen (2), Zak Burger, Stravino Jacobs, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Marco van Staden, Marcell Coetzee, Harold Vorster and David Kriel, with Keagan Johannes converting seven and Boeta Chamberlain two.

In reply, Jacopo Trulla, Giovanni Montemauri and Tommaso Di Bartolomeo went over for Zebre, Montemauri converting two and Giacomo Da Re one, with Alessandro Fusco adding a drop goal.

Don’t think the problems for the ABs will come on De Groot’s side, particularly if his Highlanders mate Holland is pushing on his side (DG had Koch in trouble against the Sharks). The TH side is likely to be more of a problem, particularly since Lomax is likely to be under-done. Newell is a big drop off from Lomax at his best. I do think Tosi was a bit naive and hard done-by against the Stormers, whose LH hinged twice before getting penalised for losing his bind. Another ref might have asked for a reset on those first 2 scrums. I do think Tosi will be #2 by the RWC.

The SA v Argentina game had more than 40min ball in play, so if thats the metric SA are doing pretty well. I take issue with all of the people who claim that Kiwi style “attacking rugby” is the only way forward and that refs must be harsh on slowing the ball down. Do you mean to suggest that the ABs don’t try to slow opposition ball down at ruck time? Of course they do. All teams do. Do you think South Africa really wants slow rucks? No we dont. We also know that quick ball creates openings. Its rugby 101. We just think that fast rucks is not the single and only important aspect of rugby and that if the ruck is already slow theres nothing wrong with taking a few extra seconds to setup for a good tactical kick or exit. There are also scrums, mauls, lineouts, tactical kicking, side steps and passing etc that are important. We also like to attack whether we have the ball or dont have the ball. Does that make us negative? I don’t think so. Our fast line speed and aggressive defence is a great weapon and a great thing to watch. It actually creates opportunities for high skill teams like NZ which makes for an intriguing contest. Its also funny that the people who call SA rugby negative and want us penalized for competing in the air, saying we are not really trying to catch it, and who want us to not get penalties from collapsed scrums, are the same people who complained that if we maul it over the line and its held up they should get a “get out of jail” dropout instead of having to go to another “boring” defensive scrum, the same people that complained that just because they were going backwards in the maul, if it collapsed and the ball doesn’t come out they should get the put in, the same people who complained that we shouldn’t be allowed to scrum from a free kick, and that failed attempted intercepts should be yellow cards. You are the people that are responsible for some of the most ridiculous laws in our game and the hours of TMO time wasted reviewing whether a knock on was “deliberate”, something that is impossible to impartially determine unless you can read minds. So before you complain about some aspect of the game in which you are inferior, rethink what you are wishing for, because it might just turn rugby union into rugby league. Honestly I think Dave Rennie would like that. The All Black style seems to be a lot like league.

Agreed, Toko - let’s embrace the clash of styles, and may the best team win. BUT that contest has to play out in a fair way without contrived stoppages, otherwise we could get to the stage where we have gridiron monsters who can go full tit for about 5 seconds max. Rugby’s best athletes have to combine power, strength AND STAMINA.

I agree the Sharks turnout was pathetic, and SA rugby need to do something about the culture of not supporting your team when they are not doing well. But the ABs have to warm up against someone. Thats how tours work. I think the Stormers game was awesome and the atmosphere was great. The Bulls are playing on the weekend and the weather will be better so hope for a better turnout then

The NH season ends then URC players get their 8 weeks off, then pre-season while the Currie Cup played now is mostly u23 players and some 2nd tier URC players after URC ends. Ackermann is saying it as it is. I would not have bothered with 4 warm up matches, maybe one warmup match then straight into test matches.

When I say “English style,” it’s a reference to the past, when the All Blacks had some difficult matches under the whistle of a certain Wayne Barnes. And Carley and Dickson seem to be following the same path.

When an All Black’s arm is held up in the air, nothing is called; when a ball is knocked down to prevent a try, nothing is called; penalties are simply invented (Tuipulotu in Game 1). Yet these referees are extremely meticulous when it comes to judging the height of tackles by NZ players, the position of the props in scrums, etc., etc.

One thing Les Kiss will like about his first Wallabies win - and three he won’t

“out Japan Japan…” that was one of the most frustrating things about last weeks performance. We had the license to play from Les, but that doesn't mean we had to up tempo everything. We would have been better off with a little more route 1, set piece control to ice the game first, then let lose. I hope this week we can play early with same forward focus we had against Italy, and lay the foundations before anything else.
