Why the Springboks' rush defence won't bother the All Blacks

Boks won't mind running. They will tackle everything that comes in range. Of course they will miss a few. AB’s are adept at offloading and changing direction late. They will breach the first line occasionally, they will also stretch us out wide.

Will they outscore the Boks though, and be able to withstand the setpiece pressure and the physicality though?

The truth is that Dave Rennie should have been appointed immediately after Steve Hansen. Graham Henry wanted him to get the job. But at the time, NZR once again opted for continuity by promoting Ian Foster, the previous head coach’s assistant, just as Hansen had been chosen to succeed Henry.

And they had probably already given Scott Robertson their word that he would be the next head coach after the 2022 episode. The decisions had effectively already been made. The position was never truly open. Jamie Joseph was the only one who applied, but he had absolutely no chance—none whatsoever. The dice had been cast long before the recruitment process even began.

Good article but I see it a bit differently than it being the ageing out of the teams, it’s the quality of the incoming breed that also makes a difference.

SA is an interesting one. Many of the Platinum squad played in Europe, became better players and have also had time in Japan. Shalk Burger, Du Toit, Louw, Koch, De Jager, Etzebeth, Snyman, Mostert, Wiese, Faf, Reinacht, Pollard, DDA, Esterheizen, Kolbe, Le Roux - most of them benefiting from the two marquee player rule that allowed squads to carry this rich vein of talent and help them all develop.

This abusing the laws narrative is a bit silly. If you are inside the law you use it to any advantage you can find like Richie Mac used to do so successfully - we never complained about “cheating” just admired how he know how to take the laws to the very limit and get away with it and advised our players and coaches to “get with the program.”

I agree there 100% there Nick. The problem is a lot of refs don’t know who is doing the wheeling so they are inclined to just give penalties to the obviously dominant scrum which then has licence to wheel as a penalty milking weapon. The answer is overhead cameras. It would just add to off field decisions but that is definitely a way of curing the cheating in the scrums.

The scrum is still the only time in the game where sixteen players are bound into a ten by three meter area so while they are bound in surely it must be an attacking advantage to the team in possession.

I mostly agree.

That said, I’m not convinced Foster was such a great motivator. I’m not sure that’s really true. What is true, though, is that he was well liked by his players, and they genuinely wanted to fight for him, which is exactly what we saw in 2022.

So how does that equate to cheating? Sorry I am lost.

The win % is because WR allows the ball to be fed under the locks feet, exactly what Rassie has been complaining about. If the feed is straight as per the rules, the attacking scrum will still win the majority, but TH’s will become more prevalent.

It was the narrowest of victories. That is more to AB’s not taking points when they could. Doesn't in anyway diminsh the Bok win.

A one point win is still a win, as is a 1 point loss which we had two in 2024. That would have given the Boks a perfect season.
