Richie Mo'unga doesn't hesitate when asked if these Boks are better than '23

Richie Mo’unga has labelled the 2026 Springboks a “complete team” after Rassie Erasmus’ men clinched a thrilling Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series win in Baltimore.

The RGR trophy may have the ability to be split in two in the event of a drawn series, but those magnets will remain connected for the next four years and will sit next to four Rugby World Cups at South Africa Rugby HQ until the tour returns, on New Zealand soil, in 2030.

South Africa overcame a game-one loss at Ellis Park to claim three consecutive wins over their famous rivals, the All Blacks, including a decisive 43-28 win to seal a historic series win at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday. While there were just three points separating the teams at halftime, the Boks struck first and second in the second half, claiming a commanding lead before the two nations traded tries in the final quarter.

“They’re just such a great team at applying pressure and taking opportunities. And we didn’t take ours,” said Mo’unga after his first 80 minutes of Test rugby in 1050 days.

The playmaker’s last international was against South Africa in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, which New Zealand famously lost by one point at Stade de France.

Mo’unga’s return Test, his 10th against the Boks, was a less even contest on the scoreboard, prompting a sentiment of admiration from the 32-year-old. He told reporters in Baltimore that South Africa are “definitely” a better side than the one he faced in 2023.

“They’re a complete team: able to take you on up front, able to be really clinical and take you in threes, but also they’ve got players who can play; guys with fast feet out in the backs,” Mo’unga said.

“It presents us with really good opportunities; we know we need to be better, and that’s been the story of the last four Tests. But if we can really take those learnings, it’ll be really exciting for the future of this team.

“I think there’ll be really good conversations around how we can build pressure. I think we’ve seen what we can do with the ball, but it might be what we can do without the ball; really suffocating them down in their own half. It just comes down to some of those small moments I think we can be better in.”

For Mo’unga, who forwent his All Blacks eligibility while spending the last three years plying his trade in Tokyo, the return to the international arena lived up to expectations.

“To be honest, it’s a bit of a blur,” he reflected only an hour after the final whistle. “I’ll have to watch that one back. But just assessing how I’m feeling, man, it’s so special to be back in the Test arena. After three years, it’s exactly what I thought it would be like; the feeling of representing and putting on the jersey again.

“I felt like I belonged out there. The last three years building to that moment, it’s just really worth it, coming back home and giving myself that opportunity.”

I feel like this is a great point:

I think there’ll be really good conversations around how we can build pressure. I think we’ve seen what we can do with the ball, but it might be what we can do without the ball.

Aside from our multiphase attack and ultimately the scoreboard pressure that come with that to force them to need to score tries and take chances, w e really didn’t put them under much pressure. Not at the lineout, maul, scrum, kickoff or on defence with physicality or suffocating them. Occasionally we kicked agressively that lead to territory pressure but that was it.

It just felt like the boks eased into their work better each test and looked really settled and well placed around the 50 minute mark.

I don't think Richie had a bad game at all… but the SB had his number, as they knew he was a risk

Dare we say, by the time 2030 rolls around the RGR trophy may be sitting beside five World Cups? 🤞

That sure would be nice, but nothing is set in stone. This AB team is going places. It's the best they have looked in a very long time. They have a lot of work ahead, but do not underestimate them

The kiwis almost lost to a third string Frame team at home. They're kot a good team, much less a great one. The Boks will have to rely on an incompetent English ref to have any chance against France in a couple of months. Some things never change.

Naaigie! Long time, no drivel! But don’t worry, nobody missed you.

Were you allowed to watch the game? I assume that your time on mommy’s taxi’s backseat had concluded by kick-off?

Anyhoo, I’m sure you’ll be gutted to hear that the Boks are now 10 points! above England on the rankings! And Borthwick has been confirmed as England coach until after the 2027 RWC 🤣🤣🤣

Remember to stock up on lube before next Saturday!

He is in hiding again. Like when he disappeared from all social media for weeks after the 2023 RWC final. He may have booked himself into a mental facility at that time which explains why he suddenly became a ghost. We’ll see if he shows up.

Kudos to Rennie for taking in a couple of handicaps in Richie and Beauden into this test, one with a view on the future, and the other for a special farewell, which so many people (All Black fans) wanted to deny the likes of Cane and TJP.

With Love being too scared to run with the ball at the line, Rennie had to make a change at 10.

I have to say that I thought Mo’Unga’s tactical kicking was better than any of the other candidates for our number one #10. and I don’t recall any moments where I thought “that was rather poor” which Love seems to elicit every match, but he didn’t set the match alight with his ball running either, which to my mind leaves him and Love both in the “adequate but not elite” category.

I disagree. He has proven his world class status a long time ago. Not even the best players have the best game every game. He is definitely rusty on the international stage, but calling him adequate is just wrong and you know that. SFM was basically average over all 4 tests, I don't see you call him adequate. Before you think I'm a Kiwi, I'm not. I'm a Saffa, but give credit where it is due.

One test in 3years is a little premature to make a decision on any rugby player.

Also thought he made some crucial tackles and his read on defense was good

He needs more time back in saddle. I c him taking over Ruben for the world cup

They are keeping Beauden in the loop cause his experience and skill set. But I don’t see him going to the world cup

I thought it was the worst of the series.

C
Carpet Monkey 1 day ago

Agree with that

Still a bit of rust but runs straight and his defense at the back was pretty good. He'll be better next year with a full Super season under the belt, but man the guy’s got his haters out there-pays to remember that he’s only had 2.5 games back from Japan. Time will tell but Love and him are the 2 best we have
