PWR Round 15 talking points: Sharks move into semi-final spots

You never know what is around the corner in Premiership Women’s Rugby. Round 15 of the 2025/26 season was proof of that.

Heading into Round 16, Sale Sharks can call themselves a top four team thanks to a 25-7 win over Bristol Bears, Trailfinders are in the race too after they beat Harlequins beneath the Friday night lights, Exeter Chiefs registered a win against Leicester Tigers in the East Midlands and Gloucester Hartpury had to dig deep to better Loughborough Lightning.

Wherever you looked there were brilliant flurries of attacking supremacy, stanch defence and maybe even a little bit of heartbreak. It was pure PWR vintage.

Here are three talking points from Round 15…

Fifth straight win puts Sharks fourth

The Sale Sharks of several months ago seem to be a distant memory now. Because right now Tom Hudson’s team have won five games in a row and are in PWR’s top four.

It was a show of pragmatic and defensive brilliance that helped Sale to a 25-7 win at Morson Stadium against Bristol Bears.

Tries for Erica Jarrell-Searcy, Shona Campbell and Katie Childs, along with two Lizzie Duffy penalties, sent Bears home with nothing to show at the end of an attritional day in the North West.

Sale have made their winning run count every single time. They have been unphased by the mud and the rain, they have found ways to win ugly when the more attractive stuff has not worked.

As of the weekend Sale have their highest ever points tally in the league. They are just one win shy of equalling their best record in a season.

It is still the likes of Georgie Perris-Redding that are the heartbeat of the team. The sort of player that embodies a team’s ideals and adds a little bit of northern soul, as well as grit, on the turf.

You then add the smattering of world-class talent like Holly Aitchison, Brittany Hogan and Rhona Lloyd that have lent themselves to the cause; it is not hard to see why things are going so well in Greater Manchester.

Sharks only have two games of their season to go. The first comes this weekend at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they will be able to put those semi-final credentials to the test against a Saracens team that have already locked up a home knockout game. In June the side will take on Exeter Chiefs to ultimately decide their destiny.

Trailfinders land big Harlequins blow

There is nothing quite like the Friday night lights for a top-of-the-table upset to be staged.

With one 80 minute performance Trailfinders Women beat Harlequins 21-17, leapfrogged them in the table and pushed their West London rivals out of the knockout rugby spots. Not a bad night’s work.

It was a contest which Trailfinders immediately had the better of and led at half-time as Tanya Kalounivale’s converted score wiped out Connie Powell’s five-pointer.

In the second half Harlequins started to have the better of things as Nicole Wythe and Beth Wilcock efforts – either side of one for Brooke Bradley – put Ross Chisholm’s team 17-14 ahead with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

To wrap up the win Abi Burton crashed over the whitewash and allowed those in Trailfinders shirts to cheer loudly into the night sky at the full-time whistle. For Harlequins, the loss was just another step in a continual downturn in form in recent weeks.

This poor run has seen Harlequins lose their last four matches. Their last win – which was against Trailfinders in January – is more like a distant memory.

This weekend Harlequins travel to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium to take on Bristol Bears. A stern task, especially on Bristol’s big day out across the Prince of Wales bridge.

Trailfinders, meanwhile, play Loughborough this Sunday, ahead of clashes with Gloucester Hartpury and Saracens to end the season.

Two months separate the first and second matches on that list. It is a significant period of time, but with the wind buffeting their sails, anything seems possible for Barney Maddison’s fifth-place Trailfinders at this point.

Lightning leave everything on the pitch against Gloucester Hartpury

There were storylines wherever you looked coming into Gloucester Hartpury’s clash with Loughborough Lightning.

Whether it was the East Midlanders’ own top four ambition hanging in the balance or Mia Venner and Bo Westcombe Evans going toe-to-toe on the wing against one another two days after they were named in John Mitchell’s England Red Roses training squad, it was clear there were going to be fireworks.

At one staged it even looked like Lightning were going to win the contest when scores for Fancy Bermudez and Carmela Morrall early in the second half handed Nathan Smith’s team a 31-12 lead.

Even after tries for Mia Venner, Hannah Dallavalle and El Perry levelled things up again, Loughborough got Alev Kelter over the whitewash with three minutes on the clock. Helena Rowland’s conversion nudged Lightning two points ahead.

A minute later Tatyana Heard got over the whitewash. It was the mark of champions. Because even when pushed to their absolute limit, Dan Murphy’s three-time champions found a way to win. Even when faced with the most adversity they have seen for some time.

It was, quite possibly, the game of the season so far. For 80 minutes we got to see two teams go blow-for-blow.

In that match-up of Venner and Westcombe Evans, each of the two-cap England backs got on the scoresheet, each landed tackles on the other and they even beat one another for pace.

It was everything you could want. Especially when you consider that the duo are being pitted against one another in John Mitchell’s England camp ahead of the Guinness Women’s Six Nations.

For Gloucester Hartpury this performance will not undermine their confidence. If anything, we can probably expect the West Country club to tighten up after a test of their resolve. Next up it is a visit from Leicester Tigers to Kingsholm Stadium.
