Paddy Jackson linked with French move...and New Zealand - reports

Former Ulster player Paddy Jackson is being linked with potential moves to both France and New Zealand – according to reports.

The news that former teammate and friend Stuart Olding has successfully signed for Brive will no doubt fuel hope that a deal could be done that would see the talented Jackson find a new home too.

Olding signed a two-year deal with French club Brive, who will be in the second tier of French rugby next season.

Both Jackson and Olding had been believed to have been close to signing with Sale in the Premiership, but a reported inquiry by the Sale Shark’s main sponsors – AJ Bell – appeared to put an abrupt end to the deal.

However, Jackson, the higher profile of the pair has been again linked with potential new clubs, both in France and New Zealand.

The Irish Independent’s David Kelly has drawn a line between departing Ulster coach Jono Gibbes, who is returning to Waikato in his native New Zealand, and Jackson.

Gibbes announced in March that he was returning to New Zealand for family reasons and it was announced this week by Waikato Rugby Union (WRU) that he will be their next head coach. The union also posted a $500,000 NZ profit this year, meaning there may even be room for a significant signing.

While – all things being equal – Jackson would be able to demand far more in Europe than in New Zealand (the Sale Sharks deal alone was reported at £340,000 per annum), considering the controversy that has plagued both him and Olding since they were acquitted of rape, getting away from Europe might be worth the pay cut.

However, Waikato already include on their books a certain Damian McKenzie, who plays for the ‘Mooloos’ when not on Chiefs or All Blacks duty.

One suggestion was that Jackson could be a good fit for nearly promoted Perpignan (USAP).

Irish website Pundit Arena suggested he might make a good match for the club. There is no doubting Jackson would instantly become one of the side’s biggest signings and would add significant star power to the flyhalf depth charts.

The club has some tenuous links to Ireland – with former Munster centre Liefemi Mafi set to retire at the end of this season.

So far Exeter Chiefs, Sale Sharks and ASM Clermont have all distanced themselves from the player. The online witchhunt centred around the allegations that Jackson was acquitted of appears to have scared off a number of clubs, but a player of his talent is unlikely to remain untouchable indefinitely.

It is just a matter time before a team comes forward that is brave enough to win his signature.

How Leinster neutralised 'long-in-the-tooth' La Rochelle

Hey Nick, your match analysis is decent but the top and tail not so much, a bit more random. For a start there’s a seismic difference in regenerating any club side over a test team. EJ pretty much had to urinate with the appendage he’d been given at test level whereas club success is impacted hugely by the budget. Look no further than Boudjellal’s Toulon project for a perfect example. The set ups at La Rochelle and Leinster are like chalk and cheese and you are correct that Leinster are ahead. Leinster are not just slightly ahead though, they are light years ahead on their plans, with the next gen champions cup team already blooded, seasoned and developing at speed from their time manning the fort in the URC while the cream play CC and tests. They have engineered a strong talent conveyor belt into their system, supported by private money funnelled into a couple of Leinster private schools. The really smart move from Leinster and the IRFU however is maximising the Irish Revenue tax breaks (tax relief on the best 10 years earnings refunded at retirement) to help keep all of their stars in Ireland and happy, while simultaneously funding marquee players consistently. And of course Barrett is the latest example. But in no way is he a “replacement for Henshaw”, he’s only there for one season!!! As for Rob Baxter, the best advice you can give him is to start lobbying Parliament and HMRC for a similar state subsidy, but don’t hold your breath… One thing Cullen has been very smart with is his coaching team. Very quickly he realised his need to supplement his skills, there was talk of him exiting after his first couple of years but he was extremely shrewd bringing in Lancaster and now Nienaber. That has worked superbly and added a layer that really has made a tangible difference. Apart from that you were bang on the money… 😉😂
