NPC-winner departs Wellington for Mo’unga's Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo
Wellington Rugby have confirmed the departure of outside back Tjay Clarke, who is leaving New Zealand’s shores after signing with two-time defending Japan Rugby League One champions Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo.
Clarke played an integral role in Wellington’s run to the 2024 National Provincial Championship (NPC) title, starting at either fullback or on the wing in 11 of 12 appearances, including a try in each of the Lions’ opening six matches.
Following an impressive provincial campaign, Clarke was rewarded by the Hurricanes, putting pen to paper on a deal with the Super Rugby Pacific side for the 2025 season. Clarke debuted for the Canes off the pine in their round 16 clash with Moana Pasifika at Sky Stadium.
In the NPC, Clarke made another six appearances in black and gold for the Lions, finishing with a 63-minute shift away to Hawke’s Bay in round six. The dynamic back made 25 appearances for Wellington, crossing for 11 tries, and scoring a total of 68 points for the province.
“Tjay’s growth over the past two years has been tremendous,” Wellington Rugby Football Union CEO Tony Giles said in a statement.
“He’s an exciting, fearless player who’s made a real impact on and off the field. While we’re sad to see him go, we’re immensely proud to see him take this next step in his career and know he’ll thrive in Japan.”
Clarke started the 2025 NPC season with three consecutive starts on the left wing, joining Losi Filipo and All Black Ruben Love in the outside backs for the season opener against eventual minor premiers Canterbury in Porirua.
After shifting to the bench for the round four clash away to Manawatu, Clarke returned to the First XV for matches against Auckland and Hawke’s Bay. The 22-year-old scored one try this season, crossing for a five-pointer away to Waikato at FMG Stadium Waikato.
Clarke is set for a new chapter in Japan, signing with competition heavyweights Toshiba, who have Richie Mo’unga and Shannon Frizell in their squad. Mo’unga delivered a Player of the Final performance in the title decider last season, beating Bernard Foley’s Kubota Spears 18-13.
“I would like to thank the Wellington Lions for giving me the opportunity to start my rugby journey — the coaches, the boys and the fans,” Clarke reflected.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time playing for this club. Wellington will always be home.”
