Les Kiss outlines what he hopes to see from Wallabies on Spring Tour

Wallabies coach Les Kiss is hoping the players will get some payoff for the hard work they’ve put in behind the scenes, as the Aussies look to bounce back from consecutive Bledisloe Cup defeats during a gruelling Spring Tour.

Joe Schmit finished in the Wallabies’ top job after the July Nations Championship fixtures, with Kiss taking over ahead of a two-Test series against the Brave Blossoms. The Wallabies were on a six-match unbeaten run before facing the All Blacks at their Eden Park fortress.

The All Blacks retained the Bledisloe Cup with a comprehensive win on home soil, before backing that up with another clinical performance on the road. But Kiss and the Wallabies have turned their attention to a four-Test spring Tour, which gets underway in just over one week.

England, Scotland, Wales and a to-be-determined opponent in the Nations Championship Finals Weekend await the Wallabies. Kiss has spoken about how significant it would be if the Wallabies can reap the rewards of their persistence and continued belief.

“I hope they get a return on the absolute work they’re doing. If you think about what we could possibly be, we’ve pushed it and I just hope they can break a little bit of a threshold,” Kiss said on Kick Offs and Kick Ons.

“Just one big dose of luck would be good, you know what I mean? Just a big dose of luck sometimes and it just fires up and they go for it.

“For them, I think that’d be quite cool, just to realise that what they’re doing makes sense and it’s worthwhile.”

Max Jorgensen famously flew down the left sideline as the Wallabies claimed a five-point win over England two years ago. It was Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s first match in Wallaby gold, and the result captured the attention of a sporting-mad nation.

The Wallabies returned to Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium last year, and it was the English who emerged victorious that evening. England ran away with a 25-7 victory, which is the most recent meeting between the sides.

Coach Steve Borthwick named a 36-man England squad earlier this week for a training camp, with British & Irish Lions skipper Maro Itoje a key inclusion. Fin Baxter, Ben Curry, Wil Stuart and Joe Merchant are among the others back in the England mix.

“The talent in that country is unbelievable. There’s going to be a pretty imposing squad they bring together,” Kiss added.

“It’s going to be a tough one but that’s the type of game you want, isn’t it? That’s where you want to be and it’s going to be interesting.”
