Laidlaw replaces Youngs in Lions squad

Scotland scrum-half and captain Greig Laidlaw

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has been called into the British and Irish Lions squad to tour New Zealand after Ben Youngs pulled out due to family reasons.

It was announced on Saturday that Leicester Tigers and England scrum-half Youngs had withdrawn from the tour, due to the wife of his brother Tom receiving news that her cancer is terminal.

Laidlaw, who plays his club rugby for Gloucester, will replace Youngs in Warren Gatland’s 41-man squad, joining fellow number nines Conor Murray and Rhys Webb.

Commenting on Youngs’ withdrawal, Lions coach Warren Gatland said: “We fully understand and respect Ben’s decision to stay at home.

“Family comes first and I know from having toured with Tom and Ben in 2013 how close they are.

“This is a difficult and important time for them and we send Ben, Tom and their family our heartfelt thoughts.”

Super Rugby Pacific has turned the ship around in the right direction

4 teams for NZ? Thats insane. Already every year we have a bunch of NPC players who are playing like SR players but cant get contracts. Going to 4 teams would just push another 30 NZ players offshore and there is zero intelligence in doing that. Id prefer to see Moana play in Sydney’s west and NZ have a 6th side if 12 is the number they want but then it all goes back to needing a round robin instead of the silly draw we currently have where the Saders, Blues and Chiefs all play each other twice.

SC you seem to be confused. Yep MP players are allowed to be NZ born just in the same way NZ born players can play for Ireland etc. MP is 80% PI elligible with an allowed 20% from anywhere else and guys like Savea, Kefu Leiliafaino etc signed due to their influence and status in the Pacifica community.

It needs these top ups to be competitive because having a completely uncompetitive MP would do far more harm than good. Please go look at the last WC where Tonga and Samoa had 39 NZ born players between the two squads. Thats where MP will benifit those PI nations in future as it will only get better.


As for the SA sides!!!!!! No thank you. Its far nicer not having the constant whinging around times and fairness, and their rugby is very average at best. Look at their constant successes in the NH eh. ( note… Sarcasm )

Borthwick definitely deserves credit for the performance against Wales. He's been justly criticised for taking so long to get a performance out of them but it definitely feels like he was the architect of that win. He picked a very strangely balanced 23 and it played out perfectly. Fingers crossed Borthwick will take the shackles off now. If we went after Ireland with that level of determination and self belief it may have been a different result. That's not to say we would have been able to play in the same manner but it felt like the first time since last year's Ireland that the players were singing off the same hymn sheet. There was a shared purpose and everyone played their part to near perfection. Again, it was a poor Wales so can't get ahead of ourselves but I hope Borthwick will turn a corner.

Start of the tournament I thought Morgan was guaranteed to go but given how the English backrow have performed in the back end of the 6N he's going to be lucky to make it. Realistically there aren't any Welshman who are guaranteed or even odds on to go… which is sad. Do they take Morgan and T Williams for the sake of the Welsh fans?


Tom Jordan will go as a utility player. He covers the whole backline. Kinghorn nailed on to start the first test.

Through the lens of ‘scenarios’ as you put it, the AIs could also have been very different. Yes, Wales are currently the worst team in the NH, but even so, neither Ireland or France dominated them so emphatically and - in the case of Ireland, after Wales had shown some improvement on previous form.


England were always going to find some groove at some point, so I don’t buy the line that Borthwick is simply ‘lucky’ anymore than I didn’t buy the line that England were unlucky on tour against the ABs and through the AIs.


With a largely development squad being sent on tour against the Pumas this summer, we’ll have to wait until the AIs in November to see whether the performance against Wales was just an outlier or reflective of a team that are starting to click.
