John Mitchell wants ‘complete performance’ from England
England are approaching Saturday’s Grand Slam decider against France at Allianz Stadium as a dress rehearsal for the knockout phase of the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
The Red Roses’ final outing at Twickenham before the tournament they host in August and September sees the Guinness Women’s Six Nations’ unbeaten teams clash in a winner-takes-all contest.
For the first time in 2025, head coach John Mitchell has picked his strongest available XV in a nod to the challenge posed by England’s greatest European rivals, although star full-back Ellie Kildunne has been ruled out by a hamstring injury.
“This opportunity on the weekend is like playing knockout football in a World Cup. This is the stage you want to get to,” Mitchell said.
“These girls have worked hard to have this opportunity. We have set a standard and when you set a standard, people want to chase you.
“Without a doubt this is the biggest test we’ve had in this Six Nations. France have been a consistent side, they have been using their group quite well and they have a really clear identity.”
England are strong favourites to win a seventh successive Six Nations title and fourth consecutive Grand Slam, having won 54 of their past 55 Tests in all competitions.
A flawless 80-minute performance remains the goal having produced outstanding periods offset by less dominant spells in the previous four rounds.
“It’s something we’ve had a chat about and it’s something we’re keen on. We know it’s there. We’re continually searching for that complete performance,” Mitchell said.
