Talking points as France close gap but can't handle Black Ferns' late surge

The one sided reporting and analysis of Rugby Pass starts to be very annoying.

It seems there was only one team on the field. No article re the French players rating and absolutely no assessment of the French squad performance in this article. Are we living in a rugby world where only English speaking teams deserve to be considered? Wake up RP if you want to keep your readers…

Nations Championship referees confirmed with finals weekend appointments TBC

My point is the risk of appointing refs that might appear from a particular nation or culture even though the individuals may be accomplished. Which all of them are. WR is giving tier 2s a chance at the whistle here. SA has been a tier 1 forever. We've had highly skilled refs like André Watson, Jaco Peyper, Johnathan Kaplan whom I met. We lived in the same town. If WR can't identify a decent SA ref to officiate then maybe the problem lies with SARU. What about if referees could be substituted at half time to get ”gametime” Don't see that happening:-))) But Morné could blow the Japan/Wales game or Fiji/Italy… with respect to those teams. I'm not sure if the idea of referees gaining popularity is helping the game.

Why the Wallabies must mount a more convincing case for the defence

Yes - that comment was from half time.

No great surprise, we lacked creativity in attack, lost our scrum dominance when the bench came on and looked off the pace in the 2nd half. That’s how we have been the last 4 games but that’s 4 poor 2nd halves in the last 4 games, which suggests fitness and squad depth is an issue.

Why South Africa's ‘scrum dominance’ gospel is spreading around the world

Penalties, as the name implies, are punitive in nature. They are not a reward. It is not the dominant team that “wins” them, it is the offending team that concedes them.

The solution is simple - if you don't want to concede one, then stay legal and backtrack.

Why South Africa's ‘scrum dominance’ gospel is spreading around the world

Tha law says that any F/R who pops up has to be penalized, but refs mostly never ping the team going forward when it happens.

Why South Africa's ‘scrum dominance’ gospel is spreading around the world

If the B/R stays bound as required by law, the only guy who can beat the 8 to the touchdown is the defensive halfback.

How Canada threw down the gauntlet and levelled the playing field against England's Red Roses

Yes the match had a slightly diff flavour as England improved defensively, but the Canada D was psoitively UBB-like in its vigour in contact and machine-like speed off the ground.

Why South Africa's ‘scrum dominance’ gospel is spreading around the world

“Great, you love exact law then, I guess you would have been happy with South Africa getting penalised on that scrum for Marx being the first one to lose his bind? Or Ox?”

Of course. In this instance, my read is that NZ 3 changing his angle was the first offense (causing RSA 1 to change his bind) but debating the specifics of one single scrum is neither here nor there. In principle, if Marx or Ox were the first to offend, then absolutely they should have been penalised.

Worcester up and running. Irish on the way back, if we believe what we read here. But what of Wasps, arguably the biggest of the three Prem teams that went under? The last I heard was something about building a stadium in Kent, which seems a pipe dream to me, unfortunately.

Gabriel Hamer-Webb: 'Becoming the man of the family so young was a tough thing' ’

He’s a magnificent player, it's a thing of beauty to see him run and turn on the speed, and he’s quickly become a fans favourite at Tigers. Deservedly so. It is humbling to learn of his family life and I hope he stays with the Tigers family for more years to come. And of course I wish him every success with Wales.
