James O’Connor completes stunning full-circle Super Rugby return
69-Test Wallaby James O’Connor is returning to where it all began at Super Rugby level, having signed with the Western Force for the 2027 season. ‘JOC’ debuted for the club as a 17-year-old in 2008, making 39 appearances in Force colours across four seasons.
RugbyPass reported on July 25 that O’Connor was close to signing with the Force, which was confirmed by the club on Wednesday morning. The Wallaby brings extensive club and international experience to the Perth-based side for next season.
O’Connor remains second on the all-time point-scoring charts for the Force, despite spending the last 15 years at other clubs in Australia and abroad. The versatile back has helped two clubs win Super Rugby titles during his illustrious 127-game career.
The Queensland Reds took out the 2021 Super Rugby AU crown with O’Connor leading the way as captain, and the Australian also emerged as a key member of the Crusaders squad that won Super Rugby Pacific last year.
But after spending more time abroad with Leicester Tigers, O’Connor is back Down Under with the Force. It’s a full-circle career moment for the 36-year-old, who will serve as an ambassador for the sport in Western Australia ahead of Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027.
“I’m excited to come over and hit the ground running. I feel like my body is primed and my mind is ready,” O’Connor said.
“I’ve had a great break now after going two years straight from the Crusaders to Wallabies and then Leicester. There’s a lot of good footy still left in me. I want to make the most of possibly my last year.
“It’s an incredible time in Australian rugby right now with the World Cup just around the corner and this is an opportunity for me to go toe to toe with the best in Australia each week.
“I’m excited to bring my experience to this group. I’ve played all over the world for two decades. I’ve seen a lot of different programs and a lot of different structures.
“I feel like my strength is creating cohesion and refining systems to work better. Whether that’s finishing a game, reviewing opposition or working with the non-23 to make the starters as competitive as possible.
“I’ve already started working in that coaching and mentoring space over the last three to four years.”
O’Connor is one of nine Wallabies who have played minutes at fly-half in the last 14 months, with the Test veteran completing a remarkable return to the Test arena during last year’s Rugby Championship.
Then Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt started O’Connor at fly-half in both Tests away to the Springboks, which included the stunning comeback win at Emirates Airline Park. The utility back also made appearances against Los Pumas and the All Blacks.
“James and I have spoken for the last three years about a return to the Western Force, but for various reasons the timing never quite aligned, despite a strong mutual desire to make it happen,” Force coach Simon Cron added.
“Following our end-of-season review and evaluating our squad structure, the timing is now ideal.
“With our current group of playmakers – notably Ben Donaldson, Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, and Alex Harford – James provides an invaluable sounding board.
“Both Harry and Ben actively discussed the benefits of bringing him into the environment, which speaks volumes about our culture of peer-to-peer leadership and driving squad standards.
“On the field, his core strengths – particularly his tactical kicking, vision, and decision-making – will directly complement the talent we already have.”
