On the setpiece in particular the scrum but all aspects of what we all knew Boks were gonna bring to the table kick contest linespeed physicality etc think most of us ABs are pretty proud of how our boys have gone .

Mainly because there was ( and still is ) potential for it to go boobies up but we have done enough to be right in there so far

No one bought the Springboks' set piece charade

check those pictures, boks knees on the ground first in two different scrums. The turf is bad at cape town, always has been - accidents happen. When everyone squared up, boks have a strong second shunt but it was largely a close contest.

Agree, doth protest to much. An example the other way around would be ABs at ruck time, not that we were completely illegal but we have had to adjust a little i think in the ruck area and it results in slower ball for us due to cleanouts by abs being highlighted - mainly i think they are hesitating a little in fear of head contact which we should. Of course everyone pushes the limits where possible and fair play SA but don’t loose it swearing when refs pickup on it.

Great article Nick. Love the contrasting styles of rugby you highlight. In many ways, it represents the cultural rugby difference.

For the Boks, when they physically dominate the opposition, they expect to win. For too long the Boks thought that physical domination was enough. Rassie introduced a new dimension of rugby IQ, work rate and skill, on both attack and defence. With that mindset, it’s tough to switch over on a dime to fluent attack based rugby.

They should do what tennis does and only update the rankings periodically, like after the Six Nations, Rugby Champ, July and Nov international windows. If NZ were #2 at the start of the series and #2 at the end they were never really #1. It gets annoying during world cup pools when all the ranking implications get discussed which will just change again the following week. Just have one before and then one after.

I am going to throw in a grenade - if we have not found our backup 10 behind Carter Gordon we need to put the SOS out to Quade. He can still do the job and is a rock solid goal kicker to backup Ryan in that department. Rennie saw the value - let’s hope Les does too if it comes to that.

Dave Rennie was whinging even though the ABs scrummed better than in the 1st test. I understand how frustrated and upset Rassie was with the constant Kiwi moaning. He was just expressing his real feelings not like Rennie who is quite two faced and used his media conferences to make points to the refs. At least when the Boks lose, they accept defeat graciously. Onto Soweto and another beating for these soft ABs.

Cheslin kicking was great and was decisive in the win keeping scoreboard pressure on and ABs at more than an arms length for the most ..but after scoring 3 identical tries did any of you Bok fans think “ go jugular we got them “

I would love to see us double down on the power and intensity with Taukei’aho and Lakai starting alongside Paddy and Lord, with Vaa’i at six (as per Ireland). Then with Holland and Darry off the bench with Blackadder or Sititi.

Agree GS - as important as the third test its time to be brave and show trust in some players who can bring something xtra and to change the narrative from reacting to the Boks to playing our game. There are a number of players who fall into that category and I think they would play out of their skins.

Agree Eric especially re composure. JB’s first kick was poor and he did not come right for a while. The ABs cannot afford to have their key players like him coming out nervous like that again.
