Hugo Keenan reportedly set to miss Bok series to pursue Olympic dream

Ireland and Leinster fullback Hugo Keenan is set to follow the likes of Antoine Dupont and Michael Hooper in making a switch to rugby sevens for the Olympics in July, according to a report by the42.

Journalist Murray Kinsella has reported that Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup final against Toulouse will be the 27-year-old’s last match in the 15-player format for the time being before he commits to Ireland Sevens, who he represented earlier in his career.

The report says that Keenan could be available for the Grand Final of the HSBC SVNS Series in Madrid at the end of May, as well as the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship in Croatia in June.

The move not only means that the fullback will be unavailable for the remainder of Leinster’s United Rugby Championship season, but he will also miss Ireland’s Test series against world champions South Africa in July, which will be problematic for Andy Farrell.

Ireland finished the regular SVNS Series in second place following a silver medal finish in Singapore, to go with their bronze medals in Perth, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The addition of Keenan, arguably the best fullback in the world, could boost their chances of an Olympic gold medal should he transition back to sevens well.

Keenan’s focus will be solely on the Champions Cup final on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which he is poised to start in after returning from a hip injury at the weekend in a loss to Ulster. The clash may not be the last time he encounters Dupont in the coming months.

The 39-cap Ireland international was an integral part of the Ireland Sevens set-up between 2017 and 2019, playing out-half, and helped the side earn ‘core status’ in the series in 2019. Since then, Ireland have gone from strength to strength, as has Keenan in his 15s career.

The men’s Olympic Sevens will take place between July 24 and 27 at the Stade de France.

France will find it somewhat easier from hereon in until they get to Twickenham. Scotland are much improved but French home advantage, flair and nous should see them victorious. Italy will have their hands full with Ireland and even home advantage may not be enough for them. Ireland will be better in the final third and O’Brien will have her kicking boots on. I would not discount Italy completely as they showed much resilience against England. Wales were flattered by the scoreline against Scotland and will have more than their hands full with probably another experimental Red Roses side. Wales need to find some creativity behind the scrum and whilst their forwards are fierce competitors they are lacking a little in physical presence. England can play poorly by their standards and still win by 30+ points. If they play well you need a calculator against some teams. I would like to see Shekells get a chance at 12 as she, I thought, was the main positive for the RRs amongst the new/newish players. Others performed OK but did not suggest they were of the same standard as the usual incumbents and worthy of being in match day squads for KO matches. Perhaps Robinson will get a start to prove me wrong. I suspect almost everyone in the squad will at least be named in a match day squad after the first two or three matches.

In the article he points out that Ford came on against a badly beaten and demoralised Welsh side and at the weekend played very well against the worst side in the prem .

He pointed out that it is ages since Ford bossed the team against top opposition and this should be remembered when comparing him with others who start against top tier opposition .

Whilst I was very disappointed England did not win RWC in 2022, for me the Red Roses are still by far the best side in the world, but in a one-off match against a highly motivated opposition anything can happen. So if they were to fall at the final hurdle again in 2025 I would be gutted as no bragging rights or ultimate fulfilment but know that they would beat that opposition probably 8 times out of ten and still be the best team in the world. A bit like Wales, they never lose a match but sometimes the opposition score more points. No doubt there will come a day when the Red Roses are not the best team in the world and possibly that will be for the good of Women’s rugby, but I cannot see that happening for some while.

Just seen your post now, RW…17 hrs later ! Very interesting. I had read recently of the Castletroy win. I had never heard of the school, had to look it up. I see only founded in 2000, so to win the Cups really impressive.

Another one off win was Glenstal Abbey winning the Cup in 2018, Ben Healy’s year.

I read the report on this year’s Cup, won by CBC. That win puts them level with PBC, 32 each. Only other school close is your Dad’s Rockwell College, on 26 wins. Only Munster has a close race. In Leinster Blackrock dominate, In Ulster, Methodist College, in Connacht, Garbally.
