How Kolisi and Etzebeth stepped up after Sharks coaching bombshell
Senior Springboks Siyamthanda Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth played a significant role in helping the Sharks through their tumultuous coaching revamp at Kings Park this week.

This past Monday Sharks Chief Executive Officer Eduard Coetzee dropped the bombshell: ‘Sean Everitt stepped down as coach with immediate effect.’
Everitt’s axing followed last week’s 0-35 whitewash by Cardiff in the Shark Tank.
Director of Rugby Neil Powell, who only started his new role in Durban in October, will now also take on the coaching reins for the remainder of the United Rugby Championship and the team’s first foray into the European Cup.
Powell, in his new dual role, on Thursday fronted up to the media for the first time since Monday’s shocker – hoping to discuss the Round Nine encounter with Ospreys at Kings Park on Friday.
After an emollient media release, littered with the usual platitudes, the Sharks made the anticipated attempt to direct questions away from the polemical coaching issue during a team announcement media briefing.
However, the media was having none of it and after some fractious exchanges with the media scrum, Powell relented and revealed that Kolisi and Etzebeth played a significant role in ‘preparing’ the team this week.
Neither will feature this week – Etzebeth being ‘rested’ after a particularly busy year, while Kolisi has been sidelined by an undisclosed injury.

Powell described the loss to Cardiff as “painful and disappointing”.
“We realised we were not good enough and there were consequences because of that,” Powell said.
“It was a different week,” the Director of Rugby said, adding: “A lot has been said this week.
“It is time to put those words into action. We can speak as much as we like, but we have to act.”
He said Kolisi and Etzebeth were both great to help ‘action’ those words.

“To have those Boks back was really good to help refocus us,” Powell said.
“We spoke a lot about what happened, how we see the next week and how the focus needs to be shifted.
“It is obviously not easy, but it was important for us to get together as a squad of 50 and talk about what happened at the weekend.”

Did you see him going backwards in contact at the weekend? Simply has not got the physical presence at 6: we need a Scott Barrett or a Finau (or wildcard Ah Kuoi), beasts who are big enough to play lock, like Frizzell. If Barret played at 6, Paddy could be joined at lock by Vai’i or one of the young giants we need to promote, like Darry or Lord (if he ever gets on the field). Blackadder best left to join the queue for 7. 2. Not even a mention for Christie? Ratima gets caught at crucial times at the back of the ruck when he hesitates on the pass. The only way he starts would be if Christie and TJ are injured.

I would take the BF one to a large provincial stadium so as not to give them the advantage and experience of playing at Twickenham before a large crowd prior to the RWC.

Over this 6 nations I can ask the same question of the media influencing the thoughts of its audience or vice versa. Nobody wants to see cricket scores in rugby, as a spectacle it is not sustainable. With so many articles about England’s procession and lack of competition it feeds the epicaricacy of many looking for an opportunity to pounce. England are not the first team to dominate nor does it happen only in rugby, think Federer, Nadal, Red Bull or Mercedes, Manchester Utd, Australia in tests and World Cups. Instead of celebrating the achievements why find reasons to falsify it pointing towards larger playing pool, professional for a longer period or mitigate with the lack of growth in other nations. Can we not enjoy it while it is here and know that it won’t last for ever, others coveting what England have will soon take the crown, ask the aforementioned?

1 Go to commentsWell where do you start, the fact that England have a professional domestic league and Ireland’s is fully amatuer, that they have fully seperated professional squads at Fifteens and Sevens (7’s thinly disguised as GB), and Ireland have fully pro Sevens squad who loan some players back to the Semi-Professional Fifteens squad (moved from amateur for only a year or so) for a few games at 6N & RWC’s. The Women’s games is a shambles, and is at risk of killing itself by pushing for professionalism when the market isn’t really there to support it outside one or two countnries..
