Henry Pollock beats Bok legend in Top 100 and SA fans respond in force

RugbyPass have announced the latest 20 players in their Top 100 countdown, with England’s Henry Pollock capping a breakthrough year with a place in the top 50.

The 20-year-old has finished in 47th, and is one of five newcomers in the latest batch of 20 players (60-41), with compatriots George Ford and Tommy Freeman also making the list for the first time.

The flanker’s place on the list is perfectly justified, but his position above South Africa captain Siya Kolisi, who became a centurion this year, has caused quite a stir among Bok fans.

While the double World Cup-winning Bok captain still finished in the top 50, he is two places below England’s rising star, in 49th.

The battle between the two flankers has overwhelmingly dominated the comments online, largely from disgruntled South African fans.

Kolisi’s position was always going to be contentious given the way he is revered in his homeland, but it has not been universally questioned, though, with one fan writing, “I think Kolisi, the player, is placed perfectly.”

Though Pollock is only in the foothills of what promises to be a successful career, he has become one of the most-discussed players in the game over the last year, largely due to his persona.

On the field, his performances warrant a place in the Top 100 after a year where he made a double try-scoring debut for England in the Six Nations, became the youngest British and Irish Lions tourist in over 50 years, and finished the year by becoming the poster boy of England’s ‘Pom Squad’ in the Quilter Nations Series, producing a number of match-defining moments from the bench.

On the club scene, the five-cap international was also instrumental in helping Northampton Saints reach the Investec Champions Cup final, scoring a solo try in their memorable 37-34 semi-final win over Leinster in Dublin.

Kolisi, I feel, is overrated and has always been given more exposure, purely because of who he is.

With regards to Pollock - he has come in at such pace and made immediate impacts such that he, in all reality, should be given the spot he was.

I dont understand why this is an issue at all. The thing I am starting to notice is all this negative press about us (South Africans) as a supporter base is starting to make sense. If I see headlines like this and then see people in the comments section lose their minds over a top 100 list with no real achievement or significance behind it, I kind off feel like apologizing to the other countries. And this is something we have been fostering for decades now. Example: 2007 Super 14 final. My sister was in tears after the Sharks lost. What did my brother do?(Bulls supporter) He tried phoning her so he could rub it in. Another example: 2008 Currie Cup final. Two of my friends actually moered a Sharks Supporter because he saw they were Bulls supporters and couldn't keep his mouth shut. The way I see it is if your team won that should be enough. We've won pretty much everything an international sports team can win. What is the issue behind a list made up by a dozen people.

How would you like him to be given exposure for being someone else or not being who he is?

Haha sounds like these must be the one and same Author!

Perhaps, there are less unhinged England than Boks fans?

Empirically flawed methodology, meaningless outcome therefore.

It would be interesting if instead it was an article about how much their opinion changes from year to year on a player. For instance I read that Beauden Barretts ranking is widely different, so who was right, last years rankers or this years rankers?

I think most South African fans are more concerned about the price of Flying Fish at Tops, heading into the festive season, than RPs top 100.

I wonder if DC would say that to a SAn's face. If so, it would be in extraordinarily poor taste, under any circumstances. And if he wouldn't, doing so here makes him a coward. All considered, just a marginal man of questionable character.

And poor judgement!

The Top 100 is a bit of fun, means nothing and is generally a trade off of opinions . . . . But when I look at the SA games and the key people in the games this year, I would be placing a higher rating to Wilco Louw & Andre Esterheizen, who have both had large impacts in results on the pitch this season. Same applies to RG Snyman when they get there, who have all made significant game changing impact from the bench this season.

I make a separation between the impact of the player and the coach for their strategical use. Those sorts of players/situations I lean heavily to their use tactically rather than say being lucky to have such a good player come in and do their thing.

The coach aint so good? You aren’t mentioning those names. The coach used a different player/tactic instead? You are mentioning those names as top 100s instead.
