George Martin: New club confirmed for England star
Saracens have confirmed the signing of England lock George Martin, as originally reported by RugbyPass.
The 24-year-old’s end-of-season exit from Leicester Tigers was confirmed on Monday, and Saracens have followed soon after by confirming the widely expected move.
Martin was in high demand, with Sale Sharks also known to be one of his suitors. He has, however, opted to move south and team up with fellow lock and England captain Maro Itoje at the StoneX Stadium.
After his Tigers departure was announced, Leicester boss Geoff Parling said: “We would have liked George to stay with the club as he’s a top-quality player developed through our academy alongside many of the current team.
“While we offered George a competitive deal to remain with Tigers, he has chosen a different direction for the next stage of his career. We thank him for his time with us and wish him well.”
A combination of knee and shoulder injuries have kept the 22-cap Englishman sidelined since February, robbing him of a chance of potentially representing the British & Irish Lions.
A shoulder operation over the summer has left the lock in a race to be fit for the Six Nations, but he will be able to take part in the second half of the season for the Tigers, whom he joined as a teenager.
“I am looking forward to the next chapter of my rugby journey,” said Martin after his move was announced.
Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall added: “George is a highly driven young player who we are delighted to welcome to the club. His attributes and character will complement and add value to the group and we are looking forward to him realising his potential in the years ahead.”
Leicester host Saracens at Welford Road on January 4, which seems too early for Martin to feature in, but he will likely line up against his future club when the two sides meet later in the season in April.
