England won't flinch with internal inquest as star admits he got it 'wrong'

George Ford insisted England would not pull any punches when they investigated why their Guinness Six Nations title hunt was over after just three rounds.

Ireland stormed to a record 42-21 victory at Allianz Stadium a week after the Calcutta Cup was seized by Scotland in another crushing defeat against opponents positioned lower in the world rankings.

A staggering 24 turnovers was the headline statistic underscoring England’s across-the-board malfunction on Saturday and Ford admitted they must get to the bottom of what happened before the final phase of the tournament against Italy and France.

“You’ve got two options – you either beat around the bush a little bit and avoid things or you get to be properly honest and pick it to pieces,” the Sale fly-half said.

“We’re going to be part of some uncomfortable meetings and some uncomfortable reviews, which will be a positive in the end because we actually want to address things and get to the root of some of the problems and come up with some solutions.

“So when you have a couple of results like this, we will take it head on and make sure that we actually get to some proper solutions that we can grow from.”

Few players emerged from the wreckage at Twickenham with their reputations intact and Ford was not among them after two penalties failed to find touch early in the match when England were still in contention.

Within half-an-hour, Ireland were 22-0 ahead and the rudderless hosts looked broken, making crucial errors. Ford then drew sarcastic cheers from fans when he did eventually boot the ball into the stands.

“There were a couple to touch, the first one I tried to be aggressive and go for it and I got that one wrong,” Ford said.

“I actually thought for the second one that I punched it into the five-metre line and obviously they thought it went the other side of the flag.

“Look, it happens. It’s not good, it’s not acceptable to do that, but stuff like that happens in sport, in games and it’s not for a lack of intent or endeavour.”

On successive weekends England have been blown away in the first half, placing an urgency on finding out why they are starting so slowly.

“We’ve got to get to the bottom of it. It’s clearly not good enough. In the first 15-20 minutes in a Test match you want to at least give yourselves a foothold in the game,” Ford said.

“Usually the emotions settle down after that period of time, but when we have conceded it has been seven, 14, 17 and then 22. It’s too much for us to get back.

“It’s obviously not good enough – the last two results and performances – and we’re going to front that up.

“What we’re going to do going forward isn’t going to be due to a lack of endeavour to get better and fix it. Hopefully propel ourselves on again.”

I’m amazed nobody’s mentioned Arundell. He’s very fast and an excellent finisher but lacks an all round back’s game. He’s not strong in the air and recently, it seems he needs to be set up to score.

I have a hard time understanding what Itoje, Genge and Pollock contribute. Others have written that Itoje is picked for sentimental reasons rather than his contribution on the field. It’s hard to argue with that.

an odd trio to highlight!

all England players have been sub-standard so far this 6N, but Genge and Pollock have been among englan’s best (or rather - least worst) players

Itoje has been very poor, but he’s England’s captain, and has been England’s most conistent performer for the past 8 or 9 years.

No point having an inquest if it’s led by Borthwick, Wigglesworth and the useless senior players leadership team who are all part of the problem!

Unbelievable analysis from ford.

How many times do we keep hearing of these meetings and learning from the mistakes.

Fact.

Borthwick has taken the team as far as his limited knowledge allowed.

continually picking ford and not replacing him v Ireland is now past favouritism .

Fords comments just shows how deluded the camp is at their lack of leadership and that means him .

What’s the betting he gets picked v Italy .

Your centres were useless and the problem . Itoje is doing nothing and agree the Backrow was unbalanced. I don’t think Marcus Smith is the answer

Either.

They all need to shut up with the pointless talking and focus on improving their skills and tactics. Talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words! Borthwick needs to go as he lacks the ability to progress the team. The senior players need to give it up as they are holding the group back and offering no leadership. The RFU need to get a grip on this, end the malaise and be decisive - unfortunately I fear we will have to put up with their negligence for a while longer!

Talking of not flinching, Ben Youngs opening comments on For the Love of Rugby are about as brutal as it gets. When two England centurions sit there and ask “What is going on boys” . . . . You are in real trouble. 🫣

@PMcD Tim from Eggchasers review of the game shares some interesting stats. England’s kicking against Ireland numbered just 18. It was 42 against Wales. I must be guilty of recency bias as I assumed they kicked a lot more.

Any problem with Hill/CCS at 6?

22Turnovers lost. Because you are one forward short. Pollock floating in the backline and not doing what a l”loosie” i suppose to do.

Pollock has been in great form for Saints. It seems to me that they are experimenting with a role to break open midfields. That's great but your other back rows then have to do the donkey work. Back to the drawing board…

They picked 3 7’s and they all failed to impact the breakdown. Get some balance in the back row and sort of the backline which is too weak, one paced, and lacks variety of options. The selection has been shocking. I haven’t seen any leadership from Ford, Itoje et al so that leadership group is redundant and should be replaced with a new generation to take the team forward

Earl too neglected his core duties to hang out in the centres. Curry didn't look 100% fit, only played 50 minutes, yet still made the same number of tackles (12) as Earl and Pollock. If 2/3rds of your backrow don’t show up for the dirty work you're bound to lose.

Sorry, but uncomfortable meetings, honest self-reflection and getting to the root of these problems doesn’t go far enough. We’re not taking about servicing your car and giving it a little tune up; the cars a write-off.

If the England senior players and VCs are not able to see that something more than just rearranging the deck chairs is needed, then I’m sorry, but you’re far too detached from the malaise to even appreciate just how far and how fast England have fallen.

Honest meetings was last week. That clearly didn’t work. This week it’s time for a full review of personnel and if you truly care about the direction England are headed in, then you should put your hand up and withdraw yourself from selection and let F. Smith have a go.

You can have Fin Smith, Marcus Smith or even Harry Smith at Out-half but unless you have a 2nd playmaker and runners offering multiple threats the attack will be predictable
