Former Australia U20 captain set for new Brumbies role in Reds derby

Former Australia U20 captain Toby Macpherson will wear the ACT Brumbies No. 8 jersey for the first time in this weekend’s derby with the Queensland Reds in Brisbane, as both sides look to bounce back from Super Round defeats.

Macpherson has only started one other match in Brumbies colours, lining up in the second row in a round five defeat to the Fijian Drua. The utility forward scored two tries in that match and has backed that effort up with a series of strong performances.

Coach Stephen Larkham has named Macpherson in the loose forwards, with Rob Valetini and Rory Scott the two flankers. Luke Reimer will look to make an impact off the pine, with the Brums going with a 5-3 bench split.

James Slipper will pack down alongside Lachlan Lonergan and Rhys van Nek in the front row, after Allan Alaalatoa was ruled out of the round 11 match in Christchurch. Nick Frost and Lachlan Shaw are the two locks, with Cadeyrn Neville on the bench.

In the backs, Declan Meredith has retained the starting role at fly-half. Meredith was replaced after 40 minutes in last weekend’s one-sided loss to the Hurricanes, with Wallaby Tane Edmed playing the full second half.

Meredith starts with captain Ryan Lonergan in the halves, while David Feliuai will again link up with Kadin Pritchard in the midfield. The Brumbies have gone with a familiar back three, with Corey Toole, Andy Muirhead and Tom Wright all named to start.
