In just four weeks time, All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson will name his first squad of 2025, ahead of the highly-anticipated home series against France in early July.

The loose forward selections for the All Blacks are always a talking point, and last year’s first squad featured one Wallace Sititi, who went on to win World Rugby’s Breakthrough Men’s 15s Player of the Year after a superb debut season.

This year’s opening squad of the year is no different and offers even more headaches for Robertson, who won’t be able to call on All-Black centurion Sam Cane in his squad.

Former All Black Jeff Wilson believes that one player in Super Rugby Pacific has been oftenunderappreciatedand should be in with a shout to be in and around the All Blacks playing 23.

I‘m going to talk about a player who I think has been a big part of the All Blacks for several years now, and he played 10 games last year. He started in four of them, and he came off the bench in six,Wilson said on The Breakdown.

It’s Dalton Papali’i for me, I look at his game and it’s probably more suited to the international game than it is to Super Rugby in terms of the way that they played last year, he was a huge part of the Blues success.

He’s a physical player who’s put on size to combat the likes of France and England and South Africa. That’s what he’s done, but I really like what he’s done in the last month and a half of Super Rugby.

“I think he’s a player that’s in a highly contested spot, the fact that the way that he plays is a little bit like same Sam Cane, a little bit underappreciated.”

Wilson admits that Robertson has many options in the loose forward department, many of which are also having solid individual seasons in Super Rugby Pacific.

“So for him, he now has to prove that his role, whether it’s as a seven, whether it’s a six, he has to prove it’s better than some young players who have put their hand up and there’s a couple coming out of Wellington.

There’s a couple of clearly down in Hamilton as well, have put up their hand. He has to find a way to show what he can do differently, and it’ll be nice for the Blues to get another opportunity.

“A couple of big performances and a couple of big games could come in handy because I think there’s some quality against the big teams that he has brought in the past.

Former All Black and current Sky Sports commentator Stephen Donald agrees with Wilson on Papali’i for the All Blacks, especially against the top and most physical nations.

“The international game and Jeff mentioned the Springboks, the English, the French, that’s where it gets interesting with someone like Dalton because he is a big body,Donald said.

“If the All Blacks are obsessed about maybe going big against the Springboks or France, then he’s an obvious one.”

100-Test former All Black Mils Muliaina strongly believes that Hurricanes loose forward Peter Lakai could be the option for Robertson at No.8.

“I think right now for me it’s Peter Lakai, it’s his opportunity to really sort of stand out and I think he’s an eight. I think he’d be my eight when you sort of go into the mix, you have Ardie at seven,Muliaina said on The Breakdown.

Don’t forget, Lakai started in Japan, and in that game, when he came on in the first few minutes against the French and played seven, he’s explosive, makes good decisions.

“He can get over the ball, he can he can jump, if Sititi doesn’t want to jump, he can jump as well. But I think he’s a raw talent and explosive.”

Donald is happy to lock Lakai into a starting 23 place and feels like the Hurricanes loose forward hasn’t been talked about enough.

“I think Peter Lakai has probably been a victim of the Ardie season, because I think he’s been a little bit sort of slept on, as far as the Hurricanes have been mid-table, he’s been outstanding all year.

For me, on a game day 23, he is an obvious one.”

If Savea is picked as a 7 (as he should be) and Sititi picked as an 8 (as he should be), then the All Blacks need to find a specialist No6. Papali’i isn’t playing 6. Peter Lakai isn’t playing 6. I’m not saying that these players aren’t possibilities for the squad or that they couldn’t be versatile, but it has been a fundamental selection flaw, in recent years, of shifting players out of position just to accommodate others.

Stop picking individual players and start picking combinations with coherent structure and defined roles. If the All Blacks need a blindside flanker, pick a specialist blindside flanker. It isn’t as if players like the Chief’s Simon Parker and Samepeni Finau haven’t been putting their hands up this season.

Papali’i, ole “ghost who walks”, whenever he plays his absence is noted and I have yet to see him feature in any of the games that I've seen this year. Not knowing the stats but I'm sure he doesn't sit in the top 3 for any of the them which is more than worrying. He's not big enough or destructive enough to play six because Ardie and Wallace are irreplaceable at what should be lockins at seven and eight.

I believe the “experiment” with the all rounders has been a complete failure and we need to return to specialists for each loose forward role.

The likes of Papali'i, Blackadder and Jacobson have never cemented their place in any of those, so we need to return to what made us the best for decades.

I would have thought Dalton would be a permanent feature after the English series, where he almost single-handedly shut down Ben Earl’s running game. But something weird must have happened in South Africa, where he went from starting to not even on the bench. If you start with Ardie at 7, and Sititi at 8, and if you believe that Sititi (and Ardie) are genuine line out options (and they’re not going to try a Barrett or Ah Kuoi at 6) , then Dalton could be the big dog at 6.

He remained injured all throughout.

If Ardie plays 7 and Wallace 8 who plays 6?do they need to be a tackle machine ruck hitter lineout option for balance? or do they play another 7? I like the Ardie Lakai And Wallace trio with Finau coming off Bench would have liked to see Blackadder in there but dude akways injured

Jacobson at 6. He’s been in top form this year and has smashed through every team’s forward pack in every game this year. Lakai, Papali’i, Kirifi or Finau can fight over the bench spot. Heck I wouldn’t even be mad if Papali’i gets the #6 spot and Jacobson goes to the bench. They’re all brilliant.

Finau is bench for the Chiefs, hard to see a bench player making it into the Allblacks bench, he'd have to leapfrog starting players at his own franchise and every other franchise.

Why Henry Pollock's x-factor could earn him a Lions Test start

Nick,

I am a long suffering England fan, who has had to endure watching 4 years of dull rugby, poor selections and painful defeats. Steve Borthwick talks about GPS and picks squads by numbers and then we put in a poor performance on the pitch - it’s been a consistent trend.

Something changed in the Six Nations and we totally changed our style (literally overnight) and played some really good footie, which finally felt like positive rugby for a change.

Genge has regained his pore-Covid form and is looking back to his best and is head and shoulders above Porter.

Chessum has had a good year and hasn’t played a poor International game this season.

Tom Curry was outstanding in the 6 Nations but they have been playing him at 6, wheras he is better at 7 and is lethal at the breakdown.

Tom Willis was brought into the starting team at 8 and has been one of the best England players over the last year, who should have been on this Lions tour at 8. Earl had his best game since 2020 last week - not sure 1 game warrants Lions selection over a poor combination side and he is certainly second choice for his club 7 country behind Willis.

Pollock will be a good player but like all young emerging players, he is inconsistent and can go quiet in games, which is why Curry should be the starter at 7. He brings energy to games, which is why he is good from the bench but there is an argument to say he is the 5th best England openside (Curry x2, Underhill & Earl are currently better) but will improve over the next 5 years. We just need to stop the media building him up for a fall, let him play and develop and you will see a sensational Henry Pollock for the Lions in 4 years time.

Lions will be too powerful over 80 mins, so doesn’t really matter who they pick. Just please don’t put too much hype on Pollock. His 20 mins of International rugby going into this tour were positive but the media caused a frenzy and no other player would be selected on this basis.

Let’s enjoy the rugby and give Pollock the space and time he requires.
