Bristol Bears’ heavy defeat to Northampton Saints has prompted a predictable and brutal reaction online, with supporters from across the Gallagher PREM settling on the same line of mockery in the aftermath.

Pat Lam’s side were beaten 94-33 at Franklin’s Gardens, a result that now stands as a record league loss for the club and leaves their semi-final hopes in serious doubt. Northampton, already top of the table, confirmed their play-off place in emphatic fashion, scoring 14 tries in total and setting a PREM record with 61 points in the first half alone.

George Hendy scored four of those tries in a display that underlined the gulf between the sides on the day. Saints had secured the bonus point early through Alex Coles and rarely eased off, with Archie McParland, George Furbank, Fraser Dingwall’s side all contributing to a nine-try first half that effectively ended the contest before the interval.

There was no let-up after the break. Three more scores in the opening six minutes of the second half extended the margin further, and although Bristol crossed through Harry Randall, Lukas Ivanishvili and Noah Heward, those efforts came with the game already long gone.

The scale of the defeat has left Bristol four points adrift of fourth-placed Exeter with one round remaining, placing their top-four ambitions under significant pressure ahead of their meeting with Harlequins.

Question marks also loom over Bristol Bears DoR Pat Lam, with some calling for his immediate sacking.

However, much of the immediate reaction has focused less on the mathematics of the league table or Pat Lam, and more on recent remarks made by Bears CEO Tom Tainton.

Speaking at a SportsPro conference in London, Tainton described the club as a “marketing agency that plays rugby”, explaining that off-field value and profile can influence recruitment decisions alongside on-field performance. The comments drew heavy criticism at the time, and Friday night’s result ensured they were quickly and mercilessly revisited.

Across X, the response was pointed.

“Big loss for the best marketing agency in English rugby tonight,” read one post that summed up the prevailing tone. “Thankfully, Bristol Bears is a marketing agency and not a rugby club, otherwise this result would be pretty embarrassing.”

There was a little variation on the theme and fans put the boot in.

“Tough night for RFC Marketing. At least you’ll get some good Instagram content next week though,” wrote one supporter, while another observed: “The CEO will be pleased, loads of tries and highlights. Result doesn’t matter.”

Others took a more direct approach. “This marketing club has a rugby problem…” was one of the more blunt assessments, while “Great marketing guys” appeared frequently in replies following full-time.

“This is karma for your CEO acting all David Brent. Focus on results not marketing,” one post read, reflecting a view that the messaging had not landed well internally.

The comments were not limited to rival supporters. Some Bristol fans also expressed frustration, linking the nature of the defeat with the timing of Tainton’s remarks.

“Thank goodness we’re only a marketing agency that plays rugby!”

Another suggested the fallout may have had an impact on the squad: “Dreadful that, few fellas look like they’ve packed it in after the ‘marketing agency’ comments.”

But attempts at humour returned to the same point. “Come on Marketing RFC,” one post read. “This should read: ‘Bears grab the headlines in record-breaking 19-try sensation against top of the table Saints’.”
