Dowson outlines return for ‘frustrated’ England prop Trevor Davison

Northampton Saints boss Phil Dowson has revealed that the club sent England tighthead Trevor Davison to Texas to help with his return to action after three operations on the knee injury he suffered earlier this year.

Dowson hopes that Davison, 34, who was injured in the Gallagher PREM victory over Saracens at the end of March, will be back in action in October.

He said that Davison, who has been capped eight times by England, is now back running with the physios, who will have the final say on when he can step up his workload before returning to action.

“Trevor will hopefully be back some time in October, that’s the target; with the long-term injured guys, things move pretty quickly.

“So, depending on how he feels, if he gets back into his running and movement stuff and his scrummaging stuff.

“Hopefully some time in October, but we’re not going to rush that, and we never do. He’s running with the physios. He’s getting involved with some skill elements. So he’s not too far away.

“It has been a frustrating time for Trev, but he’s been exceptional in terms of dealing with it and his application to his rehab and the process he’s gone through.

“He’s spent some time in the States doing some rehab as well, which I think was good to get out of Northampton and see a specialist over in Texas. He enjoyed it and getting back into running with the lads and not being stuck in a gym.

“It’s all with the people who have expertise in that area, and we rely on their expertise, and I trust them implicitly with how quickly they can get people back.

“The one thing I don’t want to do is bring him back too soon or get him doing something just on a hunch from my point of view. These guys have trained for it, so they make the decision, and I get to manage him accordingly,” Dowson told RugbyPass.
