Dave Rennie weighs in on Leroy Carter's defensive display against Boks

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has defended Chiefs winger Leroy Carter after they went down 29-24 in Soweto to trail Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, 2-1.

The Springboks bounced back after a slow start to counter-punch the All Blacks in the second half. Rassie Erasmus’ men physically imposed themselves in the second half, dominating the visitors at scrum time.

Carter, who impressed last week in Cape Town, missed two key tackles on defence that resulted in two Springbok tries, changing the momentum of the contest.

He did, though, add value in attack, providing the try assist for Will Jordan’s second-half try.

Rennie, addressing the defeat in his post-match press conference, weighed in on Carter’s missed tackles.

“I think, you know, a big fella misses a tackle around the fringe, and no one notices you,” the All Blacks head coach said.

“The winger misses the tackle out wide, and they score. And so, oh look, I feel for Leroy, he’s a bloody good man and he’s a very good defender, and yeah I’m sure he’s hurting about that.

The 62-year-old head coach added that the response hurt them more than the tackle.

“I mean, our job once that score was to bounce back and try and take control of possession, but they were able to dominate the next sort of 10 minutes, and that was pivotal.”

When asked directly about Carter’s positioning on defence, and whether it was an error of judgement, Rennie described what he saw.

“Yeah, no, that’s part of a structure about him defending high in the line.

“So the idea is to force [the attacker] him to throw one over the top or go in and try and nail the ball carrier, with cover.”

Despite falling to two straight defeats, and his second as All Blacks head coach, Rennie is convinced it’s not all bad for his side.

“So yeah, look, it’s hard when you’ve lost the Test. It’s easier to reflect on all the negative things, and so yeah,” Rennie said in Soweto.

“Look, I can guarantee you, the room’s pretty gutted. I just walked in there before, and there’s a lot of heads down, and so there’s no doubt our mindset will be to bounce back next week.”

Josh Moorby sitting back with a beer, grinning at this post. He was after all dropped because of Carters “superior defensive abilities” and then wasn’t even given a minute of play time in the second test to boot! 🤣

Unlike Rennie, Rassie selects two defensively orientated Centres while the ABs backline’s is not defence committed,

C
CHILLI 46 days ago

He dropped Moorby for Carter because he missed a tackle on Esterhuizen. The irony. Imagine Rassie dropped someone for missing a tackle. You can’t, he’s not that type of coach to do that in the first place. That’s why his players will die for him.

Anyone got any words for Cam Roigard after the simulation???

R
Ruppansy 45 days ago

Roigard seems to be in a protected class in NZ. His milking for penalties by feigning injury is despicable sportsmanship IMO. This is not soccer.

He did something similar in Super Rugby when taken out of the air by Barrett. Roigards response: if he hadn’t taken me in the air, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to milk it. In other words, I’m going to milk it every time there’s an opportunity to.

Rennie protects his players and doesn’t throw them under the bus in front of the media, and that’s a very good thing.

But… no, Carter is not a good defender. Where does he get that from?? He missed five tackles in a match against a provincial side, and now he’s missing crucial tackles that directly lead to 14 points for the opposition. You simply cannot excuse that at this level, especially since it’s not the first time. We remember that last year in England, he lost a one-on-one duel that cost 7 points.

So no, he is not a good defender. You shouldn’t say that, and he needs to be replaced for the next match.

Competition between the players has to be healthy and fair.

Yesterday, it was individual errors that cost us three tries: Carter’s two missed tackles and Jordan’s kick that went too long. It’s impossible to win under those circumstances.

If you compare the two 11’s - you would pick Hooker every time over Carter - solid defensively, good aerially and does things with the ball.

Personally, I would play either Clarke or Reiko at 11 over Carter.

NZ have excellent players. However, they don’t have a complete set of personnel like the Boks. A big part of that comes from continuity of coaching. Takes time to coach most players to be good in all departments. The Boks have been together for a long time and coach up.

100% agree and hope he played his last game for the ABs, he’s a coach killer, need a bigger body at 11 Fingeanofo?

As a bok fan who was at the game it must be said that we are nothing without the AB’s . Thank you for the best tour and we can’t wait to see you all in 4 yrs

Why are wingers defending midfield. Thats a specialist job for strong defenders. Moorby also missed a tackle that resulted in a try. SA have centres that bust tackles for fun so they need special attention. A management mistake putting Carter in the position?

I was waiting for such a BS article. The media hypocrisy here is staggering. Where was this energy in G2 when their golden boy Will Jordan didn't even touch Kriel practically under the sticks?

In G3, Jordan had his 10 minutes of highlights in the first 10, but did minimal after. In fact, his long kick completely killed our momentum, giving SA the field position to score through their maul and deflate our pressure. Meanwhile, Ruben Love left points on the board that could have tied the game. Yet the media focuses solely on Carter.

Carter actually created two tries through pure rugby IQ and skill, but he's being scapegoated for a defensive system failure. On that second miss, Kriel was outside Libbok with Arendse out wide. If Carter presses Libbok, ALB has to switch so we have a centre defending a centre (ALB vs Kriel). The inside defence didn’t slide, leaving a winger completely exposed out wide.

Coach Dave Rennie nailed it post-match when he said a big fella misses a tackle around the fringes and no one notices, but a winger misses out wide and they score. This was a collective tactical failure, not an individual one."

They call it tackle fight. Carter had ZERO.

Mate he missed two one on one tackles, what game were you watching….the D shape relied on him making them. Need to make those in international rugby.

R

You saw Carter's face last week when he ran in that try? Well i think everyone saw his face this time when two tries were scored against him earlier today.

Carter looked like a

monkey humping a football when Kriel taught him how to play rugby!

HHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Poor Leroy chasing Jesse shaking his head grabbing at his temples dropping multiple F bombs a nightmare come to life! Haha I should laugh not but just like a bad dream his legs started to move in treacle…

On the first miss he stuck his head down bit early and got the DDA bump on the second he was working to slap away the fend so much he forgot to grab and Jesse gave him a stop start then bye bye.

He will be gutted so hope the boys get round him.

Will be interesting to see if Renz gives someone else a go next week

J
JW 46 days ago

Yeah it was a skill move by Kriel and another surprising one by DDA.

I think the problem is he doesn’t have a lot of good attackers to go up against in Super Rugby, so he’s a bit raw, rough around the edges, coming into Test Match footy.

OtagomanII 46 days ago

Tough night on defence for Carter. He does like to mouth off and pump his chest during the game though. Not a good look for him.

B
Bruiser 46 days ago

I love Rens but his comment about Reikos D midweek was totally off for me..Reiks has been one of the best outside defenders for years. I'm pretty sure he would have nailed those tackles

J
JW 46 days ago

What tackles did Tupaea miss? Thought he was good, or were you referring to ALB?

J
Jordon 46 days ago

Rennie is always going to go in to bat for his guys. But anyone who watches super rugby knows that Carter is suspect at best on defense. It was strange that rennie touted him as a good defender.

J
JW 46 days ago

I think he’s using common sense and talking about as a winger Jordon, he’s not trying to say he’s a good defender like on the level of Jacobson or Barrett. I can’t actually think of any that would be any better, can you?

Love this rivalry! What a series! What a joy to host the All Blacks, my second favourite team on earth.

Well done to both teams!

As always, what has been proven a million times in different games, Carter, “the best” tackler of all time in history, did his job 100%. What fascinated me, he did it twice, first and last tries for Boks.

And second.
