One of the biggest campaigns from England fans this season on social media has been the call for Danny Cipriani to be selected for England.

The Gloucester fly-half has been imperious all season, and was rewarded for his great form yesterday by being named the RPA Players’ Player of the Year. As expected, there has been a torrent of calls from fans on social media for the 31-year-old to be selected by Eddie Jones for the World Cup later this year.

Cipriani has long been shunned by Jones, and although he featured for England in the summer tour of South Africa in 2018, he was omitted from the Autumn internationals and Six Nations. This is despite his consistent form for Gloucester, where he has been the driving force of their success this season, where the Cherry and Whites sit in third place in the Premiership.

Many England fans are astonished that Jones still has the temerity to say that Cipriani’s form has not been good enough, and feel this is the clearest message that the 16-cap international should be going to Japan in September.

Throughout Jones’ tenure in charge of England, the Australian has always favoured Owen Farrell and George Ford, either playing as a 10-12 axis, or bringing Ford on from the bench. However, there were times during the Six Nations where Jones did not show a lot of trust in Ford. This was highlighted when he did not bring the Leicester fly-half on against Wales at the Principality Stadium, despite England’s attack grinding to a halt.

Equally, Farrell came under some heavy criticism over the Six Nations, particularly for his game management against Scotland. While both of these players are still likely to make the World Cup, many feel Cipriani is worthy of a place as well, as he can bring an attacking dynamism that his peers cannot.

However, this argument from the fans has fallen on deaf ears over the past 12 months, and while many may have given up hope that Cipriani would represent his country again, this award has only stoked the flames regarding this ongoing campaign.

Nations Championship: 'The data shows the north has finally caught up with the south'

Fact: the gap between the North and the South has narrowed considerably - that I get. However, determining that only selecting only Home grown players or playing in the home country is is the optimal strategy is a bit of a toss up and highly reliant on the economies of the home union. I do understand that England and to a lesser degree Ireland selects home based only. The top 14 is a massive threat to their domestic product. France would probably not be affected (the money is at home). Fiji, Argentina, Samoa, Italy and you could even argue Scotland have only benefitted from this. Their players either go overseas to learn at higher levels (Fiji, Samoa, Argentina) or players coming into their leagues to strengthen the home product and their National teams (Scotland, Italy, Japan).

South Africa used to limit its selection to the home based players, but the reality of a weak currency vs what players could earn oversees meant that you lost access to your best players at some stage of their careers, with very few exceptions. Kolbe left SA as he was considered too small for International Rugby (yes coaches/selectors view), but ironically in France he forced selectors to notice his endeavors and select him. He is only reaching 50 caps now despite being north of 30 - granted rotation and the odd injury also played a role, but for the most part it is having debuted or becoming a regular so late.
