Springboks welcome back 10 experienced internationals from injury, namely locks Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager, utility forward Franco Mostert, back-rower Siya Kolisi, scrum-half Morne van den Berg, fly-halves Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Handre Pollard, centre/flanker Andre Esterhuizen and utility backs Ethan Hooker and Canan Moodie.

One or two half decent players back from injury … 😆 This is akin to America joining the Allied forces in WW2

Absolutely. SA is the benchmark on which Rennies ABs success or otherwise can be measured. Australia & Argentina don't have the same depth or firepower to seriously challenge the top echelon of world rugby although they may cause the occasional upset. France, Ireland, Scotland & England at full strength are the only major challengers from the Northern hemisphere. Italy & Wales are currently cannon fodder sadly. Worthy of note that only England of the Northern sector has won a world cup which has been dominated by SA & NZ.

Joe still going to be sniffing around with Bernie and the B squad wouldn’t be a surprise to see him involved with Oz at World Cup pity Pritchard broke his leg at u20s ( Hip drop btw watch this space I reckon ) but I only mention him as I heard NRL were hot to trot regarding signing him so that’s a good sign Union got him as they must see a future being sold ..Oz rugby don’t need to keep all the best talent just a slightly bigger piece of that talent pie

Steve Hansen: All Blacks have found 'something that's been missing the last couple years'

So long as the refs put an end to time-wasting (endless props needing attention), keep teams onside and rule the rucks correctly then the ABs have every chance of being highly competitive in this series. It is the TMOs and French refs that must be avoided. Best ref selections would be: Nic Berry, Luke Pearce, Angus Gardner, and Karl Dickson. No French refs please!

He has been managing a knee injury all year. I understand it got to the point where he was struggling to stand on it. I assume they are leaving him out to get his body right. I would say Shaw under Kiss is unlikely to make the match-day team.

It is interesting to draw a line between success and failure in Joe’s time with the Wallabies. Personally, I think the answer to this depends on having a long or short-term view. Very short-term, he did rescue the Wallabies and got the fans re-engaged post the very low point of the Wallabies RWC era. I think this can’t be understated, as the game was at rock bottom. Short to mid, I think we start looking at win %, and this is a failure. I think Joe was let down by a very unusual defensive system and a narrow, handcuffed attacking system. Long term I would say it has been a success, but time will tell with this one. We have had a lot of young talent exposed to Test Rugby; I think it is fairly clear to see the basic areas of the game have improved within the Australian rugby system. But more importantly, I think there has been a shift in Australia around centres of excellence. I see these specialised training groups, like what has been happening with our props, with very experienced coaches involved with the Australia A program, a coaches-for-coaches approach, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a halves hub already in progress. If this continues, I think this change to our system will be the true measure of success for the JS era.

PMcD we have been talking about the ABs going 6-2 for some time and Vaa’i is the important piece in this puzzle. He brings the much needed mass for 80 minutes - aspirationally in the PSdT mould. It means the ABs can go 4x4/5 or 4x7/8 and maintain the pace and power for the full 80 - something they have been missing. I think they may well surprise the Boks come August not simply through the speed of play, but through power normally associated with Boks teams in the third and fourth quarters.

NB I think they are building mass (height and weight) across the second row - from 4-7. The big carries in the first half came from Paddy with Vaa’i ranging more widely, while all of them combined to make for a solid scrum and line out, opening the way for Ardie to carry from 8 again. My preference would be for that mass to be retained by going 4x4/5 - replacing say Paddy and Lord with Holland and Darry in the third quarter. Having Lakai start at 7 with Sititi coming in the last 25-30 completes a picture of power, speed and dexterity even the Boks should worry about. Its been a while coming, but the stars are aligning with the ABs finally going 6-2 and Vaa’i provides the perfect opportunity for that.

Agree GVF - underdogs but not rank outsiders. Unlike any team last year, the best players in all positions may be available (except Williams). The team could have done with a year together under Rennie’s systems - but they will still present a greater challenge than Razor’s Auckland or Wellington teams.
