Bristol recruit one of their own to beef up second row stocks

Proud Bristolian Josh Caulfield is returning to Bristol Bears and PREM Rugby after one season in the Champ at Ealing Trailfinders.

The 29-year-old lock, who departed the Bears in 2025, returns to the West Country to bolster Pat Lam’s second row stocks ahead of the new campaign.

A powerful set-piece operator and industrious ball carrier, Caulfield made 36 appearances for the West Country between 2023 and 2025, but failed to make it onto the pitch last season.

“Josh is a proud Bristolian, and we’re delighted to welcome him back to the club. He already understands our environment, our culture and the way we want to play, so he’s a natural fit for the group,” said Bristol Director of Rugby, Pat Lam.

“He’s hugely respected and well-liked by the boys and having that genuine connection to the club is something we really value.

“Josh is a hard worker with a real drive to succeed, and we’re excited to have him back. We know he’ll bring quality and experience on the field, while also adding more depth to our back five group of forwards.”

Caulfield originally joined Bristol from London Irish following the Exiles going into administration in the summer of 2023, having had previous spells at Cornish Pirates, Exeter and Wasps.

Caulfield said: “Coming back to Bristol Bears is something I’m incredibly proud of. This is my hometown club, and to have the opportunity to represent the city again means everything to me and my family.

“I can’t wait to reconnect with the lads, get stuck into pre-season and do everything I can to help the team have a successful year. Pulling on the Bears shirt at Ashton Gate again is going to be a really special moment.”
