Blues confirm Beauden Barrett has broken hand

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - MARCH 07: Beauden Barrett of the Blues sits on the bench with an icepack on his wrist during the round four Super Rugby Pacific match between Blues and ACT Brumbies at Eden Park, on March 07, 2025, in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo by Phil Walter/Getty Images)

The Blues will lose playmaker Beauden Barrett for several weeks after scans revealed a fractured hand after the 21-2o loss to the Brumbies.

Barrett looked in vintage touch early against the Brumbies, scoring a first half solo try with trademark speed, before coming off at half-time.

With the All Black superstar, the Blues looked a very different side and the Brumbies climbed back to snatch a win at the death.

“The injury requires ongoing assessment before determining details of treatment or time required for recovery,” the Blues said in a statement.

The typical length of time for a broken hand is six to eight weeks, which would see Barrett return in May for the last few rounds of the regular season.

Crucially, the Blues have a tough run of Kiwi derbies starting next week with the Chiefs, Crusaders and Hurricanes.

The Blues did not score a single point without Barrett on the field against the Brumbies, which head coach Vern Cotter conceded Barrett’s absence had an impact.

“We need to be better than that,” Cotter said.

“I saw some really good things out there. We generated a lead but to lose at the last minute is always disappointing.”

The Brumbies bagged their first win at Eden Park since 2013 which leaves the defending champions 1-3 over the first month of competition.

Everyone knows Robertson is not supposed to be doing the coaching

Yeah it’s not actually that I’m against the idea this is not good enough, I just don’t know whos responsible for the appalling selections, whether the game plan will work, whether it hasn’t worked because Razor has had too much input or too little input, and whether were better or worse for the coachs not making it work against themselves.

I think that’s the more common outlook rather than people panicking mate, I think they just want something to happen and that needs an outlet. For instance, yes, we were still far too good for most in even weaker areas like the scrum, but it’s the delay in the coaches seemingly admitting that it’s been dissapoint. How can they not see DURING THE GAME it didn’t go right and say it? What are they scared of? Do they think the estimation of the All Blacks will go down in peoples minds? And of course thats not a problem if it weren’t for the fact they don’t do any better the next game! And then they finally seem to see and things get better. I’ve had endless discussions with Chicken about what’s happening at half time, and the lack of any real change. That problem is momentum is consistent with their being NO progress through the year. The team does not improve. The lineout is improved and is good. The scrum is weak and stays weak. The misfires and stays misfiring. When is the new structure following Lancasters Leinster going to click?
