Billy Vunipola moves closer to England return after being retained for Scotland clash

Billy Vunipola’s England return moved a step closer on Tuesday after the number eight was retained in Eddie Jones’ 24-man squad to face Scotland in the Six Nations.

The Saracens forward has not featured for England since tearing cartilage in his knee in November, Vunipola needing surgery to correct the problem.

At the start of the Six Nations Jones had hinted the 24-year-old could feature in the final round of matches against Ireland, but he is ahead of schedule.

He made his club return at the weekend in Saracens’ 35-27 Premiership win over Newcastle Falcons.

Those 72 minutes were enough to convince Jones to add him England’s training squad ahead of the Calcutta Cup clash at Twickenham, and his inclusion in the final 24 suggests he could feature on Saturday.

England go into the clash unbeaten in this year’s competition and on course for back-to-back grand slams.
