Bath player ratings: Bath got back to winning ways after three defeats as they saw off Sale Sharks 36-28 at The Rec in a contest that became increasingly scrappy as the afternoon progressed.

The hosts repeatedly punished Sale’s defensive spacing, with Tom de Glanville at the centre of their best attacking work and Joe Cokanasiga crossing twice. Miles Reid was hugely influential at the breakdown, while Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh repeatedly threatened in midfield as Bath built enough of a cushion to withstand Sale’s late rally and secure all five points.

15 Tom de Glanville – 9
Bath’s best player. Hit a lovely line and stepped his way through from Spencer’s fizzed pass for his first-half try before creating Cokanasiga’s opening score with excellent movement that dragged two defenders with him. Broke the Sale line again immediately before half-time and finished with three line breaks from only six carries. Three missed tackles were the only real blemish.

14 Joe Cokanasiga – 8.5
Two tries and a constant physical threat. Benefited from de Glanville’s clever movement for his first before doing considerably more himself for the second, climbing above O’Flaherty to claim Russell’s cross-field kick and then powering his way to the line. Nine carries, two line breaks and three defenders beaten made for an imposing afternoon, although he did miss three tackles.

13 Ollie Lawrence – 8
Threatened almost every time he received the ball. Sliced straight through Sale’s defence early on but could not quite release Arundell outside him, then produced an important breakdown penalty when Sale’s attack started to become ragged. Six carries, two line breaks and two defenders beaten underlined how difficult he was to contain.

12 Max Ojomoh – 8
Another strong display in Bath’s midfield. Carried 11 times, second only to Bayliss among Bath players, and continually asked questions of Sale with his footwork and ability to play at the line. Added nine tackles defensively and provided a reliable bridge between Russell and the dangerous runners outside him.

11 Henry Arundell – 8
Made an immediate impact on his first appearance of the season. Russell’s pinpoint cross-field kick gave him the opportunity to accelerate downfield before Curry’s excellent tap tackle, then moments later he gladly ran through a disastrously wide gap in the Sale defence to score from halfway. Added three line breaks and two dominant tackles, although four turnovers lost prevented an even higher mark.

10 Finn Russell – 8
Set the tone for Bath’s ambition with the quick tap and inch-perfect cross-field kick to Arundell inside the opening minutes. Produced another pinpoint kick for Cokanasiga’s second try and generally moved Sale around intelligently. Four missed tackles and an early missed penalty took some shine off the performance, but his attacking influence was substantial.

9 Ben Spencer – 7
Provided Bath with his customary control and produced an excellent fizzed pass to put de Glanville onto the line for his try. Was not required to dominate proceedings individually as the threats outside him continually found space, but kept Bath moving efficiently before Van der Linde replaced him.

1 Beno Obano – 7
Had to withstand periods of genuine Sale scrum pressure, but remained competitive and contributed around the field. Beat two defenders from five carries and completed five tackles before being withdrawn late on.

2 Dan Frost – 7.5
Another industrious showing from the hooker. Finished with 11 tackles, two of them dominant, and beat two defenders with ball in hand. Bath’s forward effort was not always comfortable at scrum time, but Frost’s work away from the set-piece was consistently strong.

3 Archie Griffin – 7
A busy defensive shift with 11 completed tackles, one of Bath’s highest totals, during his 50 minutes. Was part of a front-row that came under pressure at times from Sale’s scrum but battled well enough before Stuart arrived and helped turn that area back in Bath’s favour.

4 Will Jeanes – 7
Got through a solid body of work before making way early in the second half. Carried eight times and completed seven tackles, providing plenty of industry in a match where Bath often looked to move the point of attack rather than play solely through their tight five.

5 Charlie Ewels – 6
A quieter afternoon compared to several of Bath’s other forwards. Carried seven times and made six tackles but missed three, with Sale finding some success breaking through Bath’s first line during their better attacking spells.

6 Ted Hill – 7
A mixed but threatening performance. Made two line breaks and beat three defenders from six carries, showing his athleticism whenever Bath found space, although three missed tackles were a significant negative. Replaced after the hour before returning late on.

7 Miles Reid – 9
Superb at the breakdown. His penalty inside Bath’s own 22 in the opening minutes allowed Russell to launch the attack that immediately produced Arundell’s first opportunity, and he finished with three turnovers won – the most in the match. Added seven tackles, some in very key moments, and was one of Bath’s most influential forwards throughout.

8 Josh Bayliss – 8
Bath’s busiest carrier with 14 attempts and continually offered himself as an option through the middle and wider channels. Beat two defenders and completed six tackles, providing the sort of mobility that allowed Bath to keep Sale moving defensively.

Replacements – 8
Louie Hennessey made an instant impact with a try minutes after coming on, Tom Dunn won two turnovers and Will Stuart helped earn a scrum penalty against a Sale set-piece that had previously caused Bath problems.
