Australia to host SVNS giants New Zealand, Fiji in first-of-its-kind event

Rugby Australia has unveiled the inaugural Kick On 7s event that will be played the day before a first-of-its-kind quadruple-header in Sydney, with the Australian women’s and men’s sevens sides facing HSBC SVNS Series giants on October 16.

HSBC SVNS World Championship winners Australia will take on two-time Olympic gold medal winners the Black Ferns Sevens in a double-header at Woollahra Oval, with the men’s side taking on SVNS powerhouse Fiji across two preparation matches.

These matches will be played before another historic slate of games go ahead at Sydney’s Accor Stadium the next day, with the sevens sides set to take the field after the Wallaroos host Scotland in a WXV Global Series Test, and before the Wallabies take on the All Blacks.

RA has outlined plans for Wallabies, Wallaroos and Australia Sevens stars to be in attendance at Woollahra Oval on the Friday. They will meet with fans and help run skills clinics from 4:00 pm, before the sevens matches get underway from 6:00 pm.

Live DJs will be there performing throughout the event, as some of the world’s best rugby sevens players continue to build towards the 2027 SVNS Series. Australia and New Zealand have long been the top two sides in women’s sevens, having met in most Cup Finals again last season.

“Kick On 7s is a terrific initiative and the intimate setting of Woollahra Oval will allow fans a rare opportunity to experience first-hand the speed, skill and physicality of the Australian and New Zealand Sevens teams on their road to the Los Angeles Olympics.” Australia Women’s Sevens head coach Reg Tayler said.

“Between us, Australia and the Black Ferns Sevens have won three Olympic gold medals, and many more world titles, and our rivalry takes us to all corners of the globe each year. The opportunity to play at home is always a thrill – the Perth SVNS is an annual highlight of our calendar – and to provide more opportunities to compete in front of our own fans is something I know our entire squad will love.”

The Australia Men’s Sevens team finished the 2026 season with some strong performances, as they brought an end to their title-drought in the penultimate round. Henry Hutchison led the way as the Aussies took out the SVNS Valladolid title as part of the World Championship Series.

Australia have made some Cup Finals in recent seasons but taking that next step and becoming champions has eluded them for quite some time. But the Aussies will take plenty of confidence out of that 2026 campaign, as they prepare to face on of the Series’ top sides next month.

“A Friday night double-header between our Aussie Men’s Sevens team and the two-time Olympic champions Fiji will no doubt be a wonderful spectacle and a great addition to the Australian Rugby calendar,” Australia Men’s Sevens head coach Liam Barry added.

“The Fijians are renowned throughout the rugby world for their flamboyancy and physicality and our Australian squad finished last season’s HSBC SVNS series strongly.

“We love competing against world-class opponents and to have the opportunity to do so in front of our home fans at Woollahra Oval will excite our players and coaches as we build towards the HSBC SVNS Series in Dubai on November 28-29.”
