Maddison Levi will miss the rest of the HSBC SVNS World Championship event in Valladolid after picking up an injury, with Australia Sevens announcing the team update ahead of the quarter-finals on Saturday afternoon.

Australia Sevens have not specified what injury Levi has picked up, but have confirmed the 24-year-old will undergo scans. This is a costly blow for the Aussie side, who are looking to bounce back from a shock defeat earlier on day two.

Levi had scored six tries on the first day at the Estadio José Zorilla, stealing the show with back-to-back hat-tricks against South Africa and Fiji. The 2024 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year also touched down for a five-pointer in a crunch clash with the USA on day two.

USA defenders did well to shut Levi down, but the Australian did get over the try line just before the half-time break. Younger sister Teagan Levi made it a one-score game with two minutes left in the contest, but the USA held on for a 14-10 win.

Maddison Levi’s seventh try of the tournament saw the Aussie take another step towards the all-time SVNS Series record. But Black Ferns Sevens great Michaela Brake is still 19 tries clear at the top, with Levi averaging about 8.1 tries per tournament.

Australia are now on the same side of the draw as regular season champions New Zealand, who they have met in every Women’s Cup Final this season. The Black Ferns Sevens won five of the six SVNS 1 events and the World Championship opener in Hong Kong China.

The Aussies will take on France in the first quarter-final, while the New Zealanders face home side Spain. If the two SVNS juggernauts win their respective matches, they will face off for a spot in the big dance in northwestern Spain.
