Another surgery booked as Bristol give Louis Rees-Zammit injury update
Bristol Bears wing Louis Rees-Zammit is only expected to be out of action for a matter of weeks after injuring his foot against Saracens in the Gallagher PREM last week.
The Wales international hobbled from the StoneX pitch on Saturday after being tackled and is now being monitored by the Bristol medical staff, who will have their hands full currently.
Given the horrendous injury luck Bristol have had in the opening two rounds of the league season, Bristol fans will breathe a sigh of relief that they will not be robbed of the former NFL star for longer. It will nevertheless cast doubt on the 24-year-old’s participation for Wales in the Autumn Nations Series, where they face Argentina, Japan, the All Blacks and South Africa.
In the same injury update, the Bears confirmed that centre Joe Jenkins will be sidelined until 2026 after suffering a proximal hamstring rupture. The 21-year-old only managed 19 minutes of the 50-17 loss to Saracens before succumbing to the injury after being counter-rucked.
Jenkins will now undergo an operation on his hamstring this weekend, becoming the latest Bristol player to go under the surgeon’s knife following AJ MacGinty (Achilles), Harry Randall (hamstring) and Gabriel Ibitoye (hamstring), who were all casualties from the round one victory over Leicester Tigers.
The Bears have already brought in former scrum-half Oscar Lennon as cover for Randall, and have followed it up with the signing of Argentina centre Matias Moroni.
Following the signing, Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam said: “With the high volume of injuries to our senior backs, we’re pleased to be able to bring in a player of Matías’ experience and quality to boost our backline options for the next few weeks.
“He is a proven international and a Gallagher PREM winner, who will provide excellent cover following the injuries to AJ MacGinty, Gabriel Ibitoye, James Williams, Noah Heward, Rich Lane, Louis Rees-Zammit – and Academy centres Joe Jenkins and Toby Baker.”
Bristol host Exeter Chiefs on Saturday in the PREM Derby Weekend.
